KL Rahul had some great words for Ravindra Jadeja after his impressive 77-run performance, which helped India avoid the follow-on on Day 4 of the Brisbane Test. After sitting out the first two Tests, Jadeja finally got his shot in Brisbane, though his bowling didn’t go as planned. But when it came to batting, he really stepped up, scoring 77 runs off 123 balls when the team needed it most.
Rahul and Jadeja put together a solid 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket, helping to steady the innings after captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed early.
The Indian opener couldn’t stop praising Jadeja’s ability to come through in tough situations.
“Jadeja was fantastic today. He’s been a key player for us batting lower down the order for years. We always count on him to deliver, and he’s shown he can do it time and again. I was really glad to build a partnership with him when he came in,” Rahul shared during the press conference after the day’s play at the Gabba.
Rahul mentioned that Jadeja's innings was exactly what India needed at that moment, as he was able to build small partnerships with the lower order, helping the team bounce back when they were close to facing a follow-on.
"It was essential at that point. He ended up scoring around 70-80 runs with the tailenders. Every single run was vital for us to get past the follow-on first and then see how many runs we could add. He made that happen. Plus, he’s got a ton of experience, having played for so many years," he said.
This isn’t the first time Jadeja has stepped up to save India with his impressive performances in the lower middle order. Earlier this year, he had some key innings against England, forming important partnerships with the lower order to bring India back into contention. He also put together a massive 199-run partnership with his spin buddy Ravichandran Ashwin against Bangladesh in Chennai this season, laying the groundwork for a significant victory.
Jadeja has also had some standout performances in international matches, including a century and nine half-centuries throughout his career.
KL Rahul mentioned that people usually only talk about Jadeja's bowling.
Rahul is all about highlighting Jadeja's batting skills, which often get overlooked because of his bowling. The Indian opener pointed out that Jadeja keeps his batting straightforward and knows how to deliver for the team.
“Jadeja knows exactly what he needs to do and how to score runs when it matters. People usually focus on his bowling, but I believe he’s been fantastic with the bat too. He has a solid technique, and I really enjoy batting alongside him. Watching him play and practice is a treat. His game plan is simple and well thought out. I’m really glad he’s part of the team and can step up when we need him,” Rahul shared.
