The recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy was marked by numerous controversies within the Indian team. Following R Ashwin's abrupt retirement after the third Test and Rohit Sharma's decision to withdraw from the final match, the visitors faced a disappointing 3-1 defeat.
A significant revelation emerged from a contentious report by the Indian Express prior to the Sydney Test, which alleged that a senior player was attempting to position himself as an interim captain. This report surfaced amid scrutiny of Rohit Sharma's leadership. The unnamed player referred to himself as ‘Mr Fix-it,’ drawing criticism from former cricketer Robin Uthappa on social media. In an Instagram story, the 2007 World T20 champion condemned the unidentified player for pursuing a personal agenda.
Uthappa later addressed his Instagram comments, sharing his viewpoint on the matter. In an interview with Lallantop, he stated, “I am the type of person who directly addresses issues when they arise. I know the players individually, but during a tour or tournament, I refrain from engaging with them as each player has their own routine and mindset. It does not feel appropriate to intrude on their space during such times. Therefore, I do not communicate with anyone during a tournament, except to motivate those who may be struggling or to congratulate those who achieve success. However, I do not know who ‘Mr Fix-it’ is. If he has indeed come forward…”
Uthappa consistently denied any knowledge of the identity of ‘Mr Fix-it’ and expressed that the player should feel embarrassed by his behaviour. “People may consider it speculation, but in my view, there is no smoke without fire in the Indian team,” he remarked.
It is possible that the individuals in question are KL Rahul and Virat Kohli
When prompted to name the player, he responded succinctly, stating, “It is senior players.”
Upon further inquiry, he elaborated, “It could be KL Rahul or Virat Kohli. We consider Rahul not to be a senior player, as he has been part of the team for the past eight to nine years.”
“In that regard, it is conjectural. However, there is another perspective to consider. Personally, I am more concerned about the Indian team's reputation, particularly during a significant series. This series holds great importance, and even if issues arise, they should be kept internal; there is no need to publicize them. Families can have disagreements at any time,” he continued.
Rohit chose to withdraw from the Sydney Test, with Jasprit Bumrah stepping in as the standby captain once more. The Mumbai Indians opener is facing considerable pressure, having scored only 3, 6, 10, 3, and 9 in his five innings in Australia.
