KKR's Pitch-Perfect Sarcasm: Eden Gardens Curator Crowned 'MVP' After Loss to LSG

A significant four-run loss to the Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens has reignited tensions between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) regarding the pitch conditions. The thrilling match on April 8 saw LSG score an impressive 238 runs, while KKR narrowly missed victory with a total of 234, intensifying an ongoing discussion about the quality of the Eden track.

Since the beginning of IPL 2025, KKR has advocated for spin-friendly pitches at their home venue. However, the first three matches at Eden Gardens have featured flat surfaces that heavily favor batsmen, leading to the franchise's dissatisfaction. According to a report from Sangbad Pratidin, tensions escalated following the LSG match, resulting in a sarcastic exchange between KKR and CAB officials.

The report indicates that a KKR representative, visibly frustrated with the pitch conditions, remarked to a CAB official that they must be pleased with the outcome. When the CAB official asked for clarification, the KKR representative sarcastically suggested that the pitch curator should receive the 'Player of the Match' award, implying that the flat surface had ultimately cost KKR the game.

Throughout the season, pitch conditions at Eden Gardens have been a source of contention, with chief curator Sujan Mukherjee and KKR's management reportedly at odds. The franchise had anticipated slower, turning tracks to complement their spin-heavy bowling attack, but instead, they have encountered a series of high-scoring matches.

CAB's reply

In response to the growing criticism, CAB officials have asserted that transforming the Eden pitch into a turning track could lead to long-term damage. With the 2026 T20 World Cup approaching, the association is focused on maintaining the pitch's integrity and balance, despite the increasing pressure from the home franchise.

In the upcoming schedule, KKR's next home game is set for April 21, where they will face the Gujarat Titans. According to reports, the pitch for this match is anticipated to be drier and more favorable for spin bowling, which may signal a potential conclusion to the increasingly tense relationship between KKR and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
