KKR stars rally behind Gambhir, criticize Tiwary for 'hypocritical' remarks

India and Kolkata Knight Riders' fast bowler Harshit Rana, along with former captain Nitish Rana, has firmly dismissed Manoj Tiwary’s recent remarks regarding Gautam Gambhir, reaffirming their steadfast support for the Indian head coach.

In a fervent post on his official Instagram account, Harshit Rana characterized Tiwary's statements as a reflection of "personal insecurities," asserting that Gambhir is an individual who consistently prioritizes the welfare of others over his own.

"It is inappropriate to criticize someone out of personal insecurities. Gauti bhaiya (brother) is a person who cares more for others than for himself. He consistently supports players during challenging times and highlights their achievements when we succeed. He has demonstrated this on numerous occasions. His extensive knowledge on how to influence the outcome of games is invaluable," Harshit stated.

Nitish Rana expressed comparable views, underscoring the importance of basing criticism on factual evidence rather than personal insecurities. He remarked, "Gauti bhaiya is among the most selfless players I have encountered. He takes on responsibility during challenging times like no one else. Performance does not require public relations; the trophies themselves are a testament to that," highlighting Gambhir's significant contribution to KKR's achievements.

Tiwary's remarks

This support emerged following former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary's sharp criticisms directed at Gautam Gambhir. Tiwary, known for expressing his views on Gambhir's coaching style, referred to the head coach of India as a "hypocrite," accusing him of not adhering to his own principles.

In a discussion with News18 Bangla, Tiwary raised concerns regarding Gambhir’s selection for the role, asserting that the former opener did not possess a definitive coaching philosophy.

“What purpose does a bowling coach serve? The coach's directives will always be accepted. Morne Morkel joined from Lucknow Super Giants, and Abhishek Nayar, who worked with Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders, knows that he will not contradict his orders," Tiwary remarked, suggesting that Gambhir's dominance over his coaching team stifled authentic feedback.

Tiwary's comments followed India's 1-3 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a series that also resulted in the team's failure to secure a place in the World Test Championship final.

The scrutiny of Gambhir, alongside captain Rohit Sharma and the leadership group, has been prevalent since India's underwhelming performance in Australia. Tiwary further indicated a lack of cohesion between Gambhir and Rohit, asserting that there was noticeable tension between the two during the tour, which was intensified by information leaks from the dressing room.

Additionally, Tiwary criticized Gambhir's contributions to Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL victories, claiming that Gambhir had "taken all the credit" for the team's achievements. “Gambhir did not lead KKR to the title by himself. We all played as a cohesive unit. Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine, and I all played significant roles. Yet, who received the accolades? There exists a culture and public relations strategy that enables him to claim all the recognition," Tiwary stated.
