India, Jan. 10 -- The controversy ignited by SN Subrahmanyan, chairman of Larsen & Toubro, regarding his desire for employees to work on Sundays is rapidly gaining traction. His comments about workplace culture have faced significant backlash on social media platforms. Former Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta expressed her disapproval, lamenting the lack of seriousness given to mental health and the importance of mental rest.

Gutta characterized Subrahmanyan's remarks as "misogynistic" and described the situation as "disappointing and frightening."

She questioned, "Why should he only gaze at his wife on a Sunday?" in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

It is disheartening and at times astonishing that individuals in high-ranking positions within major organizations fail to prioritize mental health and rest, while making such openly misogynistic statements. This is indeed disappointing and alarming," she further commented.

The controversy began when Subrahmanyan, during a session with employees, was queried about the necessity for staff at the multi-billion-dollar company to work on Saturdays. It is noteworthy that this practice is increasingly becoming rare in contemporary workplaces.

In response, he stated, "I regret that I cannot require you to work on Sundays. If I could, I would be pleased because I work on Sundays."

He further reinforced his point by saying, "What do you do at home? How long can you just look at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working."

The video of this exchange has since gone viral on Reddit, with numerous users criticizing Subrahmanyan for his tone and the implications of his statements.

In light of the escalating criticism, a spokesperson for Larsen & Toubro released a statement asserting, "We believe this is India's decade, a period that necessitates collective commitment and effort to foster progress and achieve our shared vision of becoming a developed nation. The Chairman's comments reflect this broader ambition, underscoring the need for additional effort."
