The debate surrounding the remarks made by SN Subrahmanyan, chairman of Larsen & Toubro, regarding his expectation for employees to work on Sundays is rapidly gaining traction. His comments about workplace culture have drawn significant criticism on social media platforms. Former Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta has also expressed her disapproval, lamenting the lack of seriousness given to mental health and the importance of mental rest.

Gutta characterized Subrahmanyan's statements as "misogynistic" and described the situation as "disappointing and alarming."

She questioned, "Why shouldn’t he gaze at his wife… and why restrict it to Sundays?"

It is disheartening and, at times, astonishing that individuals in prominent positions within major organizations fail to prioritize mental health and rest, while also making such misogynistic remarks and revealing their biases so openly. This situation is indeed troubling and disappointing.

What is the nature of the controversy?

The incident began when Subrahmanyan was questioned during an employee interaction about the necessity for staff at the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate to work on Saturdays. It is noteworthy that such a practice is increasingly becoming rare in contemporary workplaces.

In response to the inquiry, he stated, "I wish I could require you to work on Sundays. If I could, I would be much happier, as I work on Sundays myself."

Reiterating his point, he added, "What do you do at home? How long can you spend looking at your spouse? Come on, come to the office and start working."

The video capturing this exchange has since gone viral on Reddit, with numerous users criticizing Subrahmanyan for his tone and the implications of his comments.

In light of the mounting criticism, a spokesperson for Larsen & Toubro released a statement asserting, "We believe this is India’s decade, a period that necessitates collective commitment and effort to foster progress and achieve our shared vision of becoming a developed nation. The Chairman’s comments reflect this broader ambition, highlighting that exceptional results demand exceptional effort."
