15 days ago | 5 Views
Atlanta Braves player Jurickson Profar has received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substance Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), as announced by Major League Baseball on Monday. The 32-year-old will be sidelined until late June and will not be eligible to participate in the postseason, even if the team secures a spot.
In their statement, the Braves expressed their surprise and disappointment regarding Profar's positive test, emphasizing their commitment to Major League Baseball's Joint Prevention and Treatment Program. They expressed hope that Profar would learn from this incident.
Profar extended his apologies to the fans of Atlanta, stating that this is the most challenging day of his baseball career.
“I want to express my regret to the entire Braves organization, my teammates, and the fans. My profound love and respect for this game mean that I would never intentionally do anything to compromise its integrity. Throughout my career, I have undergone numerous tests, including eight last season, and have never failed one. I would never intentionally use a banned substance, but I accept full responsibility and acknowledge MLB's ruling,” he stated.
“This situation is particularly painful for me because anyone who knows me and has watched me play understands my deep passion for the game. Competing alongside my teammates and being a fan favorite is what I cherish most,” the outfielder concluded.
What is Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)?
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that is naturally synthesized by the placenta during pregnancy, playing a crucial role in fetal development by sustaining progesterone levels. This hormone is composed of alpha and beta subunits and is also produced in small quantities by the pituitary gland. In the medical field, hCG is utilized as a treatment for infertility, facilitating ovulation in women and enhancing testosterone production in men, marketed under brand names such as Pregnyl and Novarel. However, it is prohibited in sports because of its potential to enhance performance, particularly by elevating testosterone levels that contribute to muscle growth.
