Josh Hazlewood has rejoined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for the current season, having been acquired for INR 12.50 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. In the season's opening match, he delivered a remarkable performance, taking 2 wickets for 22 runs in four overs against the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders.
During this time, Hazlewood also had the opportunity to reconnect with RCB's iconic batsman, Virat Kohli. In a video for the franchise, he shared his thoughts on the experience of bowling to Kohli in the RCB nets, describing it as both challenging and motivating.
Hazlewood noted that training sessions with Kohli are anything but ordinary. The former Indian captain's relentless drive compels his teammates to elevate their performance, even in practice.
"There are days when you arrive at training feeling a bit lackluster, just going through the motions. But when you see him standing 22 yards away, it really energizes you. Training turns into a competition, especially in the middle. He certainly possesses that commanding presence," Hazlewood remarked in a video featured on RCB Bold Diaries.
The Australian fast bowler also emphasized how Kohli's aggressive approach keeps the energy levels high, ensuring that RCB's batting lineup maintains a vigorous intensity.
"I have immense respect for his achievements in the sport and what he continues to accomplish. He is one of those players who attacks and plays his shots, which is always beneficial as it helps to advance the score," he concluded.
Hazlewood on bowling to Kohli in int'l cricket
Having competed against Kohli in international cricket, Hazlewood recognizes the difficulties associated with bowling to this modern-day legend. The right-arm fast bowler has taken Kohli's wicket 11 times across various formats, yet he concedes that the Indian icon remains a highly sought-after achievement.
“He’s a significant wicket for us in any format. He has scored numerous centuries against us across all formats, so in the nets, he truly challenges you. By the time you finish, you feel prepared for the match,” Hazlewood remarked.
Both Kohli and Hazlewood were instrumental in RCB’s impressive victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the season opener. Hazlewood claimed two wickets, while Kohli led the chase with an elegant half-century, guiding RCB to a convincing seven-wicket win.
