Jos Buttler Takes a Swipe at Concussion Controversy: 'We Have Four Impact Subs
1 month ago | 5 Views
England's captain Jos Buttler is still thinking about the concussion substitute issue from the fourth T20I against India. He made a pointed comment during the toss for the fifth T20I at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. When asked about his lineup for the final match of the series, Buttler mentioned that England has "four impact subs."
For those who might not know, Harshit Rana was brought in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube in the fourth T20I in Pune, but many felt this substitution wasn't a fair match. Former players like Kevin Pietersen, Michael Vaughan, Aakash Chopra, and Ravichandran Ashwin criticized the match officials and referee Javagal Srinath for allowing it.
While chatting with Ravi Shastri at the toss, Buttler pointed out that the team is utilizing four "impact subs." It's worth noting that this impact player rule is a feature of the Indian Premier League (IPL) but isn't applied in international matches.
Buttler stated during the toss, "We're going to chase. We have one change. Mark Wood comes in. And our four impact subs today are Rehan Ahmed, Saqib Mahmood, Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Smith."
'That was super clever of Buttler'
Kevin Pietersen, the former England captain, couldn't help but laugh at something Buttler said during the toss. He also commended the England team for handling the concussion substitute situation gracefully after their 15-run loss in the fourth T20I.
"It was really funny. I don't think Ravi Shastri caught it because of all the noise in the stadium. Buttler mentioned he has four impact subs. Very clever, very clever! But honestly, the England team has managed it really well. They haven't complained or made a scene in press conferences," Pietersen shared during the Star Sports broadcast.
"They've taken it in stride. I expect a lot of fire in their bowling. They’re not going to make it easy for the Indian batters," he added.
As for the fifth T20I, England's captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. Both teams made one change to their lineups, with England bringing in Mark Wood for Saqib Mahmood, and India swapping out Arshdeep Singh for Mohammed Shami.
