Defending MotoGP champion Jorge Martin experienced an unfortunate accident on Wednesday, resulting in fractures to his hand and foot that necessitated surgical intervention. The incident occurred during pre-season testing at Sepang, Malaysia. Following his victory in the 2024 MotoGP Championship, the Spaniard transitioned from Pramac Racing to Aprilia.

A video of the incident, which has gained significant attention on social media, shows Martin losing control of his motorcycle at turn two, leading to a high side that propelled him into the air before he landed forcefully on the tarmac. He struck the ground face-first, causing his helmet to shatter, and the session was momentarily suspended. Emergency medical services promptly transported him to the medical center, after which he was transferred to a hospital for further treatment.

In an official announcement, MotoGP reported that Jorge Martín has sustained a fracture in his right hand along with fractures in his left foot. He has undergone both a CT scan and an MRI, which revealed no additional injuries.

Martín will remain in the hospital overnight and is scheduled to return to Europe the following day for surgical procedures on his right hand and left foot.

In a separate statement, Aprilia disclosed that after the incident, Martín was initially assessed at the circuit medical center before being transferred to Aurelius Hospital in Nilai for comprehensive examinations. The results confirmed a closed fracture of the fifth metacarpal head in his right hand and closed fractures of the third, fourth, and fifth metatarsals in his left foot. Following the tests, which included a CT scan and MRI that both returned negative results, he will stay in the hospital overnight and will depart for Europe on Thursday for surgery on his injuries. Lorenzo Savadori will step in for Jorge Martin to continue the development of the RS-GP25.
