During the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's batting innings against the Mumbai Indians, there was a standout moment when Jitesh Sharma dramatically stepped across his stumps, dropped to one knee, and executed a paddle sweep off Trent Boult that sailed over fine leg for six runs.
RCB fans are used to seeing wicketkeeper-batsmen pull off such shots, but they'll be thrilled to see Jitesh showcasing the same flair and creativity that made AB de Villiers and Dinesh Karthik fan favorites over the years.
Ahead of RCB's match against the Delhi Capitals, Jitesh acknowledged Dinesh Karthik's influence in honing this aspect of his game. Karthik, who retired after the 2024 IPL season, is now part of RCB's coaching staff.
"It's been an amazing journey so far because I really put in the effort with him during the off-season," Jitesh shared. "Every shot I’m playing now is a reflection of what he used to do. He’s working to mold me into a new player because he believes I can play all around the ground. I’m really enjoying this new role."
Jitesh scored an impressive 40 runs off 19 balls against MI, featuring four sixes that helped RCB reach a total of 221/5. Along with the paddle sweep, he displayed a variety of scoops and flicks, enhancing his already powerful batting style.
"I'm really pleased with how those shots are coming off because I’ve never attempted them before. I’m able to execute them thanks to all the support I receive from the management," Jitesh said, highlighting the role RCB's leadership has played in his growth.
Jitesh attributes his mental comeback to DK
Jitesh is aiming to recover from a tough season with Punjab Kings last year and is hoping for a comeback at Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also mentioned how Dinesh Karthik played a key role in helping him regain his mental strength after that challenging time.
"I believe my performance last year was more about my mindset. I wasn't fully focused on the game; I was preoccupied with future concerns," the 31-year-old shared. "But after meeting Dinesh bhai, he reassured me that mistakes are part of the game. It's not as complicated as it seems; everyone goes through it."
"I’m someone who prioritizes winning over just scoring runs. My passion lies in clinching matches," he continued. "[Karthik] noticed that I was missing some shots, and we've started to work on improving that. We're still in the process of getting there."
Jitesh and RCB are gearing up to face DC at Chinnaswamy Stadium as they aim for the top position in the league standings.
