Jimmy Neesham's Stunning Catch Ruled Not Out After Bizarre Slip in SA20 Match

With SA20 in full swing, cricket fans are really enjoying the action in South Africa's top T20 tournament. Things took a nostalgic turn on Saturday when Pretoria Capitals faced off against Paarl Royals. New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham left everyone in shock by dropping an easy catch, reminiscent of Herschelle Gibbs’ infamous drop back in 1999.

The game kicked off with Pretoria winning the toss and choosing to bowl first. Then, during the last ball of the fifth over, Neesham let a straightforward catch slip. Jason Behrendorff bowled a solid delivery to Joe Root, who sent it to deep square leg. Neesham sprinted to his right, caught the ball with both hands, but somehow it slipped out of his grip, hit his thigh, and rolled away to the boundary for four runs. Commentator Pommie Mbangwa couldn't help but say on-air, “He's done a Herschelle Gibbs.”

What actions did Herschelle Gibbs take?

In 1999, there was a memorable moment during a Super Six World Cup match between Australia and South Africa in Leeds. South Africa set a target of 271 runs, thanks to a century from Gibbs. While chasing, Australia was at 149/3 after 30 overs when Steve Waugh hit a ball from Lance Klusener to mid-wicket. Gibbs had an easy catch but ended up dropping it while celebrating, which turned out to be a huge mistake. Australia went on to win the game, with Waugh scoring a century, and they eventually clinched the title.

In a recent match, Neesham's blunder allowed Root to finish not out with 78 runs off 56 balls, including eight fours and two sixes, helping Paarl reach 140/4 in 20 overs. For Pretoria, Kyle Simmonds, Senuran Muthusamy, Eathan Bosch, and Will Jacks each took a wicket.

Neesham last played for his country in a T20I against Pakistan in April 2024 and has been active in international cricket since then. He was part of the teams that finished as runners-up in both the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup.
