Javed Miandad Blasts Pakistan Stars: ‘Where’s the Professionalism?’

Concerns are being raised regarding the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the selectors following Pakistan's disappointing performances in the Champions Trophy. The team faced significant defeats against New Zealand and their longstanding rivals, India, resulting in their elimination from the tournament they were hosting. Former captain and esteemed batsman Javed Miandad has emphasized the need to scrutinize the players as well.
"It is futile to blame the system, selectors, and so forth," Miandad stated, as reported by PTI. "The real question is whether these selected players are lacking in any aspect. Does the PCB not provide adequate support? Are their salaries insufficient? Therefore, where is the passion, determination, and professionalism to excel in crucial matches and tournaments?"
'Players were under pressure even before the match began'
The lack of aggression displayed by Pakistan's batters was identified as a significant factor contributing to their defeat against India. Pakistan managed to score 241 runs before being all out in 49.4 overs. In response, India successfully chased the target in 42.3 overs, with Virat Kohli achieving an unbeaten century off 111 balls. The following day, New Zealand's victory over Bangladesh sealed Pakistan's exit from the Champions Trophy in the first round.
Miandad remarked that the players appeared to be under considerable pressure even prior to the match. "The reality is that our players were feeling the pressure from the outset. Observing their body language, it was evident that none of them seemed prepared to take charge against the Indian bowlers," he stated.
The absence of regular opener Fakhar Zaman significantly impacted Pakistan's performance. He was substituted by a struggling Imam-ul-Haq, who managed only 10 runs off 26 balls before being run out. Additionally, Saim Ayub was also unavailable. Both Fakhar and Ayub are recognized as Pakistan's most dynamic batters, and former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his astonishment at the lack of suitable replacements for these players.
"It is indeed surprising to witness this deficiency in bench strength. Pakistan has historically possessed abundant natural talent. While they may not always adhere to technical correctness, they possess an instinctive grasp of the game. Take Inzamam-ul-Haq, for instance. His stance would not be recommended for young batters, yet his temperament was exceptional. Such temperament compensates for any technical deficiencies," Gavaskar commented.
