Jasprit Bumrah on Fast Bowling: 'I Make You Uncomfortable, Not Abusive'

The inaugural day of the fifth and final Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy culminated in a thrilling and intense exchange, highlighted by a confrontation between Jasprit Bumrah and 19-year-old Sam Konstas. This encounter reached its peak when Bumrah celebrated vigorously after dismissing Usman Khawaja with the last delivery of the day.
Typically known for his composed demeanour, Bumrah appeared unsettled by a remark made by Konstas during the final over, prompting him to respond assertively following his significant breakthrough for India. Alongside Bumrah, players such as Prasidh Krishna, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Virat Kohli were also eager to taunt the young Australian after the wicket fell at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Although Bumrah is generally more reserved, he shared insights during an interview with Forbes India for their Showstoppers 2024 segment, revealing his readiness for competition shaped by his early experiences in cricket.
“I am aggressive; it’s just that I don’t feel the need to verbally abuse the batsman. As a child, I observed bowlers on television who would scream and shout, engaging in confrontations,” stated India’s leading bowler and captain for this match. “When I attempted to emulate that, I found myself becoming overly aggressive, which did not serve me well in club cricket.”
“Upon realizing that I was crossing the line, I made a conscious effort to manage it,” he reflected. “When I maintain a calm and relaxed demeanour, others are unaware of my internal thoughts, which provides me with a psychological edge. This approach enables me to remain composed and make more informed decisions.”
‘I’m not there to give throwdowns…'
Bumrah underscored the importance of bowlers adopting an assertive mentality in cricket, a game that largely benefits batters. He remarked, “I represent aggression; my purpose is not to offer easy deliveries for batters to accumulate runs. I aim to aid my team's success. However, my expression of aggression is unique; I refrain from verbal insults. Instead, I demonstrate my intensity through my body language and my bowling approach.”
When asked about his stance on sledging, Jasprit Bumrah explained that while he does not avoid it if it occurs, he does not actively seek it out. This was particularly pertinent in light of Konstas, who has taken on the role of a provocateur in the ongoing series. “I cannot deny that it happens, but I do not instigate it,” Bumrah stated. “When it is directed at me, I maintain my position, as that has always been my style of play. Although it would be simple for me to engage in such disputes, I deliberately opt not to, as I prefer to concentrate on my performance.”
As Australia wraps up the day at 9-1, they are set to pursue India's total of 185. Bumrah and his teammates will hope that the pitch retains sufficient liveliness to foster an engaging contest, following yet another lacklustre batting performance.
