Jasprit Bumrah reached the pinnacle of his performance in 2024, consistently delivering outstanding results for India in every match he participated in. The Indian fast bowler, who claimed 32 wickets during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, has been honoured with the title of ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year. Bumrah's exceptional skills were evident in both domestic and international settings, as he effectively neutralized the impact of the pitch and emerged as a formidable competitor.
In securing this prestigious award, Bumrah triumphed over notable contenders such as England's Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis. He is distinguished as the first Indian fast bowler to receive this honour. Previous Indian recipients of the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year award include Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli.
At 31 years of age, Bumrah demonstrated remarkable prowess in home matches, playing a crucial role in India's victories against England and Bangladesh. His capabilities were equally impressive in overseas conditions, where he stood out as the leading bowler during tours of South Africa and Australia.
In 2024, Bumrah achieved a remarkable feat by claiming 71 Test wickets, surpassing England's Gus Atkinson, who secured 52 wickets in 11 matches. The Indian fast bowler maintained an extraordinary average of 14.92 and concluded the year with an impressive strike rate of merely 30.1.
Throughout the year, Bumrah delivered 357 overs in the longest format, solidifying his reputation as the premier workhorse of the team. He became only the fourth Indian bowler, following in the footsteps of Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev, to surpass 70 Test wickets within a single calendar year.
How did 2024 go for Bumrah in Tests?
The fast bowler, recognized as the Player of the Series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, commenced 2024 by claiming eight wickets over two innings in Cape Town, contributing significantly to India's dominant victory over South Africa.
Subsequently, he secured 19 wickets throughout the five-match Test series against England, aiding India in achieving a 4-1 triumph. However, it was during the series against Australia that Bumrah truly excelled.
He concluded the series with an impressive total of 32 wickets from five Tests, earning the title of Player of the Series. Notably, during this series in Australia, Bumrah surpassed the 200 Test wickets milestone, becoming the 12th Indian bowler to reach this achievement.
Furthermore, he distinguished himself as the only bowler in Test history with at least 200 dismissals to maintain an average below 20 (19.4). In the series opener in Perth, Bumrah took the lead in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma.
He delivered a remarkable performance, achieving a five-wicket haul in the first innings, which was pivotal in India's recovery after they were dismissed for 150. He added three more wickets in the match, facilitating a resounding 295-run victory for India.
Unfortunately, the speedster experienced back spasms during the Sydney Test against Australia, leaving one to ponder the potential impact had he participated in the second innings.
