Jasprit Bumrah a mixture of Denis Lillee, Andy Roberts, can reverse like Wasim, Waqar: Australia great Greg Chappell

India's Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is widely regarded as one of the premier bowlers in the world today. At 31 years of age, he currently holds the title of the No.1 Test bowler, a position he attained following an impressive eight-wicket haul during the Perth Test against Australia, where he guided India to a significant victory in Rohit Sharma's absence. Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell has lauded the Indian fast bowler, describing him as a "compelling figure" in the sport.
Bumrah has been a key player in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having taken 12 wickets across two Tests. With 54 overs bowled, he faces considerable pressure as the series is tied heading into the pivotal Gabba Test.
As the leader of the Indian bowling attack, Bumrah demonstrated his capabilities by claiming five wickets in the first innings of the Perth Test, despite India being dismissed for just 150 runs. His leadership on the field has been instrumental in boosting the confidence of his teammates.
In his column for The Sydney Morning Herald, Chappell remarked, "Among the modern era’s firebrands, Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as a compelling figure, inviting comparisons not only to these stalwarts but also to current South African champion Kagiso Rabada."
I have consistently maintained that Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts were the most well-rounded fast bowlers I encountered. How does Bumrah, with his unconventional bowling style and exceptional control, compare to these two legends and other prominent figures in contemporary fast bowling? he inquired.
Continuing his thoughts, Greg Chappell remarked, "Although Bumrah may not exhibit overt aggression, he embodies Lillee’s knack for disturbing batsmen's rhythm. His lethal yorkers and unsettling bounce—particularly due to his unique release point and trajectory—reflect Lillee’s ability to dominate the game. Bumrah’s understated intensity and accuracy render him a formidable opponent, reminiscent of Lillee’s relentless drive.
"Bumrah also mirrors Roberts’ strategic mindset. Both bowlers employ subtle variations to deceive batsmen, emphasizing tactics over sheer power. Bumrah’s performance during the 2018 Boxing Day Test against Australia, where he achieved figures of 6-33, serves as a contemporary reflection of Roberts’ impactful spells," he concluded.
Roberts and Bumrah's similarity in their bowling actions
Greg Chappell observed that Andy Roberts exhibited a similarly relaxed run-up to that of Jasprit Bumrah. He noted, "Roberts had a smooth and unhurried approach, coupled with a powerful shoulder action akin to Bumrah's, which allowed the ball to reach the batsman rapidly. Therefore, it was crucial to maintain concentration on the ball as it departed the bowler's hand. I prepared for his full deliveries and aimed to strike the ball straight, ensuring I remained in a neutral stance to present the full face of the bat as frequently as possible."
Bumrah, a right-arm fast bowler, has participated in 42 Test matches, claiming 185 wickets at an impressive average of 19.96. He is well on his way to establishing himself as one of India's premier bowlers.
Chappell remarked, "Bumrah exemplifies this adaptability. With 151 wickets at an average of 21.03 in merely 30 Tests, his proficiency in various conditions is reminiscent of Marshall’s supremacy. Bumrah’s ability to generate reverse swing on worn pitches and his skill in seam and swing bowling under overcast conditions have been crucial, creating the same level of uncertainty that batsmen experienced against Marshall. As Ian Botham famously stated regarding Marshall, 'He provided no relief.' Today, batsmen express similar frustrations about Bumrah."
He further added, "Bumrah’s talent for reversing the old ball has led to comparisons with this legendary duo. His performances during the 2021 England series and the 2022 South Africa tour highlighted his command of reverse swing, rendering batsmen powerless against his late-dipping yorkers—a signature of Wasim and Waqar."
Chappell concluded by asserting that if there is any obstacle between Australia and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it is Bumrah.
The legends of the past have laid the groundwork, yet Bumrah is now forging his legacy—one that is destined to motivate future generations of fast bowlers. Fast bowling, regarded as the most captivating aspect of cricket, flourishes through these remarkable figures. Bumrah, with his unique talent, is a prominent figure among them, representing the formidable force that Ian Chappell articulated so well.
"Let there be no doubt, Bumrah is the barrier between Australia and the Border/Gavaskar Trophy," Chappell further remarked.
