Mumbai Indians' pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has inscribed his name in the annals of history during the IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium. Bumrah has surpassed Sri Lanka and MI legend Lasith Malinga to emerge as the franchise's highest wicket-taker in IPL history, attaining an impressive total of 171 wickets.
The historic milestone occurred in the third over of LSG's innings when Bumrah made his impact with his very first over. Delivering a back-of-the-length ball targeting the middle and leg stump, he induced Aiden Markram to inside-edge a flick directly to Naman Dhir at backward square leg. This pivotal wicket dismissed one of LSG's most in-form batsmen early, shifting the momentum in MI's favor during the chase.
Bumrah currently leads Mumbai Indians’ wicket-taking statistics with 171 wickets from 141 innings, surpassing Malinga’s tally of 170 wickets achieved in 137 innings. Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh occupies the third position with 127 wickets in 154 innings. Below is the list of the top five wicket-takers for MI in their IPL history:
- Jasprit Bumrah leads with 171, followed by Lasith Malinga at 170, Harbhajan Singh with 127, Mitchell McClenaghan at 71, and Kieron Pollard with 69.
After Bumrah's amazing wicket, MI's owners, Nita and Akash Ambani, got up to give a round of applause for the star bowler.

Earlier in the evening, the Lucknow Super Giants won the toss and elected to field first. The openers for the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, delivered a rapid start. However, Mayank Yadav, making his return to the IPL, struck early, dismissing Rohit for 12 runs off merely 5 balls.
Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav then assumed control, combining to create a crucial 55-run partnership. Rickelton, in particular, exhibited aggressive batting, scoring 58 runs off 32 deliveries before being dismissed by Digvesh Rathi. Suryakumar Yadav maintained the offensive, reaching 54 runs off only 28 balls. Towards the conclusion, Naman Dhir contributed an unbeaten 25 runs off 11 balls, while debutant Corbin Bosch hit 20 runs off 10 balls to elevate the Mumbai Indians to an imposing total of 215/6.
For Lucknow, Mayank Yadav and Avesh Khan were the standout bowlers, each taking two wickets. LSG now faces the formidable challenge of pursuing a significant target of 216 runs to sustain their playoff aspirations.
