Jasprit Bumrah set a new record on Tuesday, surpassing the legendary Kapil Dev, by claiming two rapid wickets during Australia's second innings in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. These two dismissals with the new ball established Bumrah as the leading Asian wicket-taker in Australia.
In the third over of the innings, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja, breaking through his defense with a delivery that struck the inside edge, then the back pad, ultimately hitting the off stump. Shortly thereafter, he removed Marnus Labuschagne with a well-placed length ball, which the batter edged, allowing Rishabh Pant to complete the catch behind the stumps.
With these two wickets, Bumrah has now overtaken Kapil Dev for the most wickets by an Asian bowler in Australia, bringing his total to 52 wickets in just 10 Test matches at an impressive average of 17.21. Kapil Dev previously held the record with 51 wickets in 11 matches, followed closely by Pakistan's Sarfaraz Nawaz with 50 wickets.
A look at Bumrah's performance in this series
The vice-captain of the Indian team has emerged as the most reliable performer throughout the series, surpassing all others from his team. He currently holds the position of the leading wicket-taker in the competition, having claimed 21 wickets in merely six innings at an impressive average of 10.71. The next closest competitor is Australia's Mitchell Starc. Notably, his total of 21 wickets ranks as the sixth-best performance by an Indian bowler during a tour of Australia.
Bumrah's impressive record includes two five-wicket hauls. The first was achieved in Perth, where he captained the Indian side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, while the second occurred during the first innings in Brisbane. Furthermore, Bumrah has equaled his wicket tally from the 2018/19 series, becoming the second Indian bowler to secure over 20 wickets in two different tours of Australia. Anil Kumble was the first to accomplish this milestone, with 24 wickets in 2003/04 and 20 wickets in 2007/08.
