Jasprit Bumrah Removed from India's ODI Squad: What This Means for Champions Trophy
2 months ago | 5 Views
Jasprit Bumrah won’t be part of the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, and the uncertainty about his fitness is only increasing. The Indian fast bowler suffered from back spasms during the Sydney Test against Australia. Despite this, he was included in India's squad for the ODIs and the Champions Trophy.
When the squad was revealed, chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that they were hopeful he’d be ready for the third ODI against England. However, on Tuesday evening, the BCCI quietly took him off the squad list and announced Varun Chakravarthy as his replacement.
The board hasn’t provided any updates on Bumrah’s injury or why he’s missing the ODIs against England. His absence definitely raises some questions and is concerning, especially with the Champions Trophy just around the corner.
As per a report from the Times of India, Jasprit Bumrah has already arrived at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will be in Bengaluru for a few days. He’ll only return to play once he gets the green light from the physios at the NCA.
What did Ajit Agarkar mention?
Earlier this January, when the Champions Trophy squad was announced, Agarkar didn’t provide a straightforward update on Bumrah’s injury but mentioned that the fast bowler was advised to take a break for five weeks.
"Bumrah has been instructed to take it easy for five weeks, so he won't be playing in the first two ODIs against England. We're waiting to hear about his fitness, and we should get an update from the medical team in early February. By then, we’ll likely have more details about his condition, and I’m sure the BCCI will share something from the physio," Agarkar stated.
For those who might not know, all teams can adjust their provisional squads for the Champions Trophy until February 11. The Indian management has just eight days to decide on Bumrah’s involvement in the eight-team tournament.
Here’s India’s squad for the ODI series against England: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy.
