Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has rejoined the Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scheduled for April 7 at the Wankhede Stadium. However, it is improbable that he will participate in the game, as he has only recently returned from an extended injury layoff.

Bumrah had been sidelined due to a back injury sustained during the final Test against Australia in Sydney earlier this year, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The BCCI medical team recommended a five-week recovery period starting in early January, which resulted in his absence from the home white-ball series against England and the Champions Trophy. Following back surgery, he underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

In the weeks leading up to his return, the 31-year-old gradually increased his bowling workload as he approached his final fitness assessments. He joined the MI squad only after receiving clearance from the BCCI's medical personnel.

Mumbai announced his comeback on Sunday through a Game of Thrones-themed video shared on Instagram, with the caption: "Ready to roar." In the video, Bumrah's wife, Sanjana Ganesan, narrates to their son Angad, “In 2013, a cub ventured into the jungle—a jungle filled with runs, sixes, and boundaries. In a place where others trembled, he displayed bravery. Throughout the years, he faced numerous challenges, fighting for survival and honor. He experienced victories and defeats, yet never surrendered. These struggles left him with scars, but they did not define him. Once a cub, now a lion. The lion has returned, ready to reclaim his place as the king of the jungle.”

Mumbai Indians have participated in four matches in IPL 2025, recording a win-loss ratio of 1-3. In the absence of Bumrah, the team has brought in new players such as Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur, and Ashwani Kumar, while Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have taken the lead in the pace bowling department. Hardik Pandya, who also plays a role as a bowler, achieved his first five-wicket haul in the IPL during the last match, further bolstering the team's seam attack.

Since his debut in 2013, Bumrah has been an essential part of MI's bowling lineup, accumulating 165 wickets across 133 matches. The only season he missed was in 2023, when he underwent back surgery.
