Jasprit Bumrah has discussed his experience facing Australian debutant Sam Konstas on the first day of the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He noted that the 19-year-old's unconventional approach did not intimidate him.
Konstas, who aggressively confronted Bumrah's pace attack, managed to hit the Indian bowler for two sixes in the early stages of the match, despite initially facing difficulties. On Day 3, Bumrah spoke to the host broadcaster about his experience against the debutant, indicating that he was not surprised by Konstas's style, given his extensive background in T20 cricket.
"I have encountered a lot of this over the years. I have been playing T20s for the past 12 years. He is an intriguing batsman," Bumrah remarked, reflecting on his experiences with aggressive players in the shorter format.
"I always felt engaged in the game; I never thought I was far from taking his wicket, perhaps even six or seven times in the first two overs. However, that is the nature of cricket. Some days it works out well, and other days it does not. I enjoy facing different challenges and always look forward to them," he concluded.
Konstas' audacious stroke-playing
Konstas, having faced a barrage of precise deliveries from Bumrah in the initial overs, altered his strategy and embraced a more unconventional style of play. The Australian debutant struck Bumrah for two towering sixes, clearly indicating his aggressive intent.
This bold approach did not wane, as Konstas went on to score a rapid 60 runs from 65 balls. His explosive innings set a formidable foundation for Australia’s first innings, leaving the Indian bowlers struggling to contain the aggressive batting.
Konstas' dynamic performance enabled teammates such as Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith to build on the momentum, with each contributing significant scores. Australia concluded their innings with an imposing total of 474, while India found themselves in a precarious position at 164/5, with Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the Indian effort with a determined 82.
On Day 3, however, Nitish Kumar Reddy played a pivotal role in India's resurgence in the Test match, aiding the team in evading the follow-on.
