Jasprit Bumrah Must Exercise Caution: McGrath Highlights Injury Concerns

13 days ago | 5 Views

Renowned Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has urged Jasprit Bumrah to intensify his off-field efforts to extend his playing career. In recent years, Bumrah has encountered numerous challenges, primarily due to recurring injuries. The leading pacer has missed several significant tournaments as a result of back issues, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, the 2023 World Test Championship Final, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

At 31 years of age, Bumrah suffered a back injury during the final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, rendering him unable to bowl for India in the second innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which allowed Australia to reclaim the prestigious trophy after a decade.

McGrath emphasized that while Bumrah has managed to cope with the physical demands placed on his body in the past, he must adopt a more strategic approach to prevent ongoing injuries.

“He exerts more strain on his body compared to other bowlers. He has discovered methods to handle it, but unfortunately, this is not always effective. He has previously made successful comebacks from injuries and understands better than anyone the necessary recovery time and gym work. As he is no longer as youthful as he once was, he must be more judicious in his actions,” McGrath stated in an interview with the Times of India.

McGrath further illustrated his point by likening fast bowling to operating a vehicle, suggesting that Bumrah must invest additional effort off the field to maintain his performance.

“He needs to put in even more work off the field. Being a fast bowler is akin to driving a car; if you don’t refuel, you will eventually run out of gas. My fuel tank was larger than Jasprit’s because I didn’t bowl as fast as he does. These athletes are aware of how to perform at their peak. If India is under pressure, they will require his presence,” he concluded.

Bumrah likely to miss initial phase of IPL 2025

Meanwhile, the 31-year-old is likely to miss the initial rounds of the IPL 2025 matches for Mumbai Indians as the star pacer is still recovering from the lower back injury. In Burmah’s absence, the Hardik Pandya-led side will rely on other pacers like Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar to deliver till he returns. The five-time champions will start their 2025 campaign against rivals Chennai Super Kings on March 23 at Chepauk Stadium.
