India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Men’s Cricketer of the Year, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday.

Bumrah had an outstanding 2024, showcasing his skills in every match he played. He outshone other nominees like Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook to claim this honor.

With this win, he becomes the fifth Indian to receive the award, joining the ranks of Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).

Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah was also recognized as the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year earlier.

Bumrah had an amazing 2024, consistently making the ball do his bidding. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, he became the fastest Indian fast bowler to hit 200 Test wickets, solidifying his status as the top-ranked bowler in Tests. He also surpassed the coveted 900-point milestone in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings, wrapping up the year with a jaw-dropping 907 points, the highest ever for an Indian bowler.

Bumrah really stole the show during India's T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean and the US. He took 15 wickets throughout the tournament, boasting an impressive average of 8.26 and a low economy rate of 4.17, which earned him the title of Player of the Tournament.

Bumrah's incredible performance in Test matches

Bumrah had an incredible year, taking 71 Test wickets in just 13 matches, making him the top bowler of 2024. He’s only behind Kapil Dev for the most wickets by an Indian fast bowler in a single year.

He also ended the year as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he claimed 32 wickets and was named Player of the Series.

One of his best moments came during the T20 World Cup against Pakistan, where he took 3 wickets for just 14 runs, helping India defend a modest total in New York. He followed that up with a stellar performance in the final against South Africa, taking 2 wickets for 18 runs in four overs, including key dismissals of Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen.

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah was a one-man army for the visitors, taking five-wicket hauls in Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne, completely dominating the Australian batsmen.

Unfortunately, his injury in Sydney was a turning point, as it led to Australia clinching the last Test and the series, despite Bumrah giving India a fighting chance to level things up.
