India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for December, thanks to his stellar performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under. He set a new record for the highest rating points by an Indian in the ICC Test rankings, outshining other nominees like Pat Cummins and Dane Paterson, who are also top wicket-takers in the World Test Championship. This marks the second time Bumrah has snagged the ICC Player of the Month title.
Bumrah wrapped up an impressive year on the international scene with some fantastic displays in Australia, taking 22 wickets across three Tests in December, averaging just 14.22.
As the Australian team gained momentum, coming back from a 1-0 series deficit, Bumrah was key to India’s defense, starting strong in Adelaide with figures of four for 61.
Moving on to Brisbane, he completely dismantled the Australian batting order, claiming six for 76 in the first innings and following it up with three for 18 in the second.
Bumrah had another impressive nine-wicket haul in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, featuring a standout performance of five for 57 in the second innings. This achievement helped the 31-year-old set a new record for the highest rating points ever by an Indian bowler.
Looking ahead, Bumrah is aiming for more success in the upcoming weeks as he’s up for two major awards at the ICC Awards 2024: the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year and the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
“I’m really excited to be named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for December. It’s always a great honor to receive individual awards, and it feels good to have my hard work acknowledged,” Bumrah shared.
“The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was one of the toughest battles I’ve ever been a part of, and it was a privilege to represent my country and perform at that level.”
