Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah made history on Wednesday by surpassing veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to become the highest-rated Indian bowler in the ICC Test rankings. While Bumrah celebrated this career milestone, former India captain Virat Kohli experienced a significant decline, reaching a 10-year low in his ranking.
The ICC published the updated rankings on Wednesday, following the conclusion of three Boxing Day Test matches: Australia vs. India, South Africa vs. Pakistan, and Zimbabwe vs. Afghanistan.
Bumrah concluded the Melbourne Test against Australia with a remarkable nine-wicket haul, which included his third five-wicket performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. His outstanding performance in the fourth Test earned him an additional three points, elevating his ICC rating to 907, the highest ever recorded by an Indian bowler. The recently retired Ashwin follows closely with a rating of 904, achieved in 2016. Both Bumrah and Ashwin are the only Indian bowlers in history to have surpassed the 900-rating threshold. Among batters, Kohli (937) and Sunil Gavaskar (916) have also reached this milestone.
In terms of historical context, Bumrah's current rating ranks as the 17th-best in the history of the ICC Test rankings, surpassing the late Shane Warne's previous best of 905.
Kohli slips to 10-year low; Rohit Sharma dipped to...
The 36-year-old player, who experienced a double setback at the MCG, has fallen from 21st to 24th place in the batting rankings. This marks his lowest ranking since August 2014, when he was also positioned 24th, following a disappointing tour of England. Additionally, this represents his poorest year-end ranking on the ICC chart since 2012, when he had ascended four places to 36th after scoring 103 against England at home.
Conversely, Rohit Sharma's situation did not improve despite his return to the opening position, as he managed scores of 3 and 9 in Melbourne, resulting in a drop to 40th place in the rankings. This is the lowest ranking he has seen in six years.
In contrast, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who achieved scores of 82 and 84 against Australia in the fourth Test, reached a career-high rating of 854, maintaining his position at No. 4 in the rankings.
