Jason Gillespie Criticizes PCB: "Pakistan Soured My Love for Coaching" After Decision-Making Exclusion
10 days ago | 5 Views
Former Australian all-rounder Jason Gillespie has decided against pursuing a full-time coaching role after his experience with the Pakistan senior men's team. He took on the position of Test team coach in April 2024 but stepped down in December, feeling "blindsided" by several decisions made by the management without his knowledge.
In an interview with Wisden, Gillespie shared that the experience left him feeling disillusioned, and even if Australia approached him for a coaching position, he would decline at this time.
He also briefly served as the interim white-ball coach after Gary Kirsten's resignation. Shortly after his departure, Gillespie expressed concerns about the lack of communication with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
“Right now, I’m not sure I’m interested in coaching full-time," he stated. When asked how he would respond if Australia reached out, he said, "No, I’m not interested.”
“The experience with Pakistan has dampened my passion for coaching, to be honest. I believe I’ll regain it eventually, but that situation was really disappointing for me," he added.
Gillespie refers to Aaqib Javed as a clown
After Pakistan's departure from the Champions Trophy, coach Aaqib Javed emphasized the need for stability, advising the PCB to avoid making too many changes to the support staff and players. This prompted Gillespie to label Aaqib Javed a "clown" for consistently undermining him throughout his coaching period.
On a different note, Gillespie is open to coaching in T20 leagues, which typically involve short-term commitments. "I’m open to coaching in the leagues and taking on some short-term roles or consulting. But a full-time coaching position isn’t on my radar right now," he mentioned.
"I’ve been in full-time coaching for nearly 15 years; I feel it’s time for me to explore other opportunities," he added.
Regarding Pakistan, the team led by Mohammad Rizwan faced a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand and also lost the five-match T20I series 1-4.
Pakistan's performances have been under constant scrutiny, and their recent results in New Zealand have only added to the disappointment.
There have been multiple shifts in Pakistan's management. Gary Kirsten and Gillespie joined last year to oversee the senior men's team, but both resigned just months into their roles. Currently, Aaqib Javed is coaching both the white-ball and red-ball teams.
