Jannik Sinner Clinches Second Consecutive Australian Open Title with Straight-Sets Win
26 days ago | 5 Views
Jannik Sinner snagged his second consecutive Australian Open men's singles title on Sunday, taking down Germany's Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He delivered a solid performance with a 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in the final, marking his third Grand Slam title and back-to-back wins after his US Open triumph last year. At just 23, he also made history as the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles.
Sinner is now the youngest player to win the trophy in Melbourne two years running since Jim Courier did it back in 1992-93.
From the start, Sinner was in control, breaking Zverev’s serve in the eighth game of the first set and sealing it with a powerful ace. The second set was a nail-biter, with both players holding serve until Sinner pulled ahead in a tense tiebreak. He kept up the pressure in the final set, facing no break points and finishing the match comfortably on his serve.
Sinner climbed to the No. 1 spot last June and has held onto it ever since, with a noticeable lead over No. 2 Zverev, especially evident in Rod Laver Arena. This marked the first Australian Open final featuring the top two ranked men since 2019, when No. 1 Novak Djokovic took down No. 2 Rafael Nadal in straight sets.
Sinner's journey to the top has been impressive, especially considering the uncertainty he faced last year during a doping investigation that he was eventually cleared of. With this win, Sinner entered an exclusive group, matching Rafael Nadal's achievement of winning consecutive titles at the same Grand Slam after his first major victory.
While Sinner became the eighth man in the Open era (since 1968) to start his Grand Slam final career at 3-0, Zverev now stands at 0-3, adding this latest defeat to his losses at the 2020 U.S. Open and the 2024 French Open.
Those previous losses were both in five-set matches, but on Sunday, the difference was clear.
