"Jaiswal Ruining His Career? Will End Up Like Pujara" – Riyan Parag's Captaincy Sparks Nepotism Debate
2 days ago | 5 Views
On Thursday, Rajasthan Royals made a significant announcement, appointing all-rounder Riyan Parag as the interim captain for the first three matches of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This decision followed regular captain Sanju Samson's statement that he would participate in the initial games solely as a batsman. The choice, however, sparked discontent among fans on social media, who criticized the franchise for overlooking Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Samson shared this news during an informal conversation, which was captured in a video released by Rajasthan on social media. "I am not yet fully fit for the next three games," Samson stated. “Our team has many leaders. Over the years, several remarkable individuals have fostered a positive environment. For the upcoming three matches, Riyan will take the helm. I anticipate everyone will support him and stand by him.”
This marks Parag's debut as a captain in the IPL, although he has previously demonstrated his leadership skills while playing for the Assam team in domestic cricket. This decision comes a year after a breakthrough season for the young player, during which he amassed 573 runs, the highest for an RR player and the third-highest overall, leading to his first selection for the Indian national team.
Nevertheless, social media users expressed that Jaiswal had been "robbed" of the captaincy, particularly given his consistent performances for the franchise. Rajasthan faced backlash for not recognizing the India star, who has recently been mentioned in discussions about potentially succeeding Rohit Sharma as the national team captain in the future. Jaiswal was candidly told, “He is jeopardizing his career with Rajasthan Royals.”
Why will Samson miss the first few games?
The wicketkeeper-batsman sustained an injury to his right index finger during the T20I series against England earlier this year, necessitating surgical intervention. Subsequently, he underwent rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Although Samson rejoined the RR camp on Monday and has been cleared to bat, it has been advised by the medical and sports science teams at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence that he should allow his fingers additional rest before resuming wicketkeeping duties.
As a result, it is anticipated that Samson will participate in the initial matches as an Impact Sub, with Dhruv Jurel designated to take on the wicketkeeping role.
