Jaiswal-Kohli Mix-Up Derails India's Comeback; MCG Crowd Boos Kohli

A huge mix-up between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli threw a wrench into India's strong comeback on Day 2 of the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG in Melbourne. Jaiswal and Kohli were looking solid, balancing caution with some aggressive play. They had just passed the 100-run mark in their partnership and were aiming to finish the day on a high note when disaster struck in the 41st over.

After nailing a fantastic square-cut off Scott Boland that brought him into the 80s, Jaiswal hit a fuller ball to mid-on and took off for a single. He was convinced there was a run to be had, but two issues popped up. The ball was hit hard and went straight to Pat Cummins, and Kohli, who was at the non-striker's end, wasn’t keen on running.

Kohli held his ground despite Jaiswal's shout and even turned to check on the fielder. If he had just trusted his partner, they might have snagged that single, but once he hesitated, it was game over. Jaiswal was all in for the run, and by the time he realized Kohli wasn’t coming, it was too late—he was already too far down the pitch. Cummins scooped up the ball and fired it back to keeper Alex Carey, who quickly removed the bails.

Kohli pointed at the fielder, indicating he was too close, while Jaiswal gestured back, claiming it was his decision. In the midst of all this, India lost their third wicket. Jaiswal, who was on track for his second century in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, made a slow walk back to the pavilion after scoring a solid 82.

Virat Kohli squanders a solid beginning

India's worst fears came to life when Boland delivered a ball that moved just enough from outside the off stump. Kohli, who had been so calm and focused up to that point, reached for it and ended up edging it to Carey. Was it the pressure from the run out, or just a moment of distraction? Most likely the latter, but suddenly, India went from looking strong to facing the prospect of a hefty first-innings deficit.

As Kohli walked off after scoring 36, the crowd let him have it with boos.

And it didn’t stop there. Just a couple of overs later, nightwatchman Akash Deep fell victim to a rising delivery from Boland aimed at his body.

India started strong at 152/2 but ended the day at 164/5, still trailing Australia by a hefty 310 runs, with Rishabh Pant (6*) and Ravindra Jadeja (4*) at the crease.

Earlier, captain Rohit Sharma's struggles continued as he was dismissed for just 3 while attempting a short-arm pull off Cummins. Just before the Tea break, Cummins bowled a stunning delivery that sent a well-settled KL Rahul back to the pavilion for 24.

This came after Australia posted a massive first innings total of 474, thanks to an impressive 140 from Steve Smith.
