Jaiswal Encouraged to Adopt Sehwag's Mindset for Test Success

Jaiswal Encouraged to Adopt Sehwag's Mindset for Test Success

Cheteshwar Pujara has evaluated the errors made by Yashasvi Jaiswal during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although the left-handed batsman achieved a remarkable century in the second innings of the Perth Test, he has struggled to maintain his form since then, losing his wicket twice in the first over to Mitchell Starc. The young batting talent appears to be rushing against the new ball, which has not been beneficial for him.

Pujara, who played a pivotal role in India's previous two BGT victories in Australia, noted that Jaiswal seems eager to play his shots at the beginning of his innings. He advised the young left-hander to focus on playing the ball on its merit, which is essential for an opener in red-ball cricket.

"He needs to allow himself more time; his current approach suggests he is trying to accelerate his innings and play shots prematurely. He should only attempt shots when he is confident, particularly in the first 5-10 overs. It appears he is eager to score quickly, aiming for those initial 15-20 runs too hastily. As an opener in Test cricket, one should not chase the ball but rather play the deliveries based on their merit," Pujara stated on Star Sports.

Pujara referenced the legendary Virender Sehwag, an aggressive opener who refrained from playing reckless shots on deliveries outside his striking zone, emphasizing that Jaiswal should adopt a similar mindset.

"Even aggressive players like Virender Sehwag would only play shots when the ball was in their hitting zone. There are numerous aggressive batsmen and openers in Test cricket today who wait for the right deliveries to play their shots. However, it seems that Yashasvi is attempting to play shots on deliveries that are not pitched up," he concluded.

‘The way KL Rahul is playing…’

The experienced Test player advised Jaiswal to show respect to the fast bowlers at the beginning of the innings and to commence his shot-making when the deliveries are slightly fuller.

"He must remain composed and spend additional time at the crease. By demonstrating confidence in his defensive technique, he will encounter deliveries that are conducive to shot-making. When a batsman respects the bowlers and defends effectively, the bowlers will become eager to secure a wicket, leading them to pitch the ball higher, which presents opportunities for drives," he elaborated.

Pujara simplified the guidance for Jaiswal, suggesting he emulate KL Rahul's approach in this series.

"Jaiswal should adopt the same strategy as KL Rahul, particularly in how he executes drives against overpitched deliveries," he concluded.
