Jadeja Surpasses Anderson: New Leader in India-England ODI Wickets

2 months ago | 5 Views

Ravindra Jadeja delivered an exceptional bowling display in the first ODI against England at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. The left-arm spinner achieved remarkable figures of 3/26 in his 9 overs, contributing significantly to India's effort in dismissing England for 248 runs in 47.4 overs. This performance also elevated Jadeja to the position of the highest wicket-taker in ODIs between India and England, surpassing the legendary James Anderson when he claimed the wicket of Jacob Bethell in the 43rd over on Thursday.

Bethell attempted a powerful slog sweep but failed to connect with the ball, which struck his pads. Despite a strong appeal from the Indian team, the umpire initially declined. Following a brief consultation with Jadeja, Indian captain Rohit Sharma opted for a review. The replays validated Sharma's decision, leading the umpire to overturn his original call. This marked Jadeja's second wicket of the match, propelling him to the forefront of the wicket-takers list in ODIs between India and England.

Shortly thereafter, Jadeja further weakened the English batting lineup by dismissing Adil Rashid. He now boasts a total of 42 wickets in 27 ODIs against England, with an impressive average of 23.28, significantly lower than his overall ODI bowling average of 35.70. Anderson, whose record Jadeja surpassed, had taken 31 matches to achieve 40 wickets against India. Following him on the list are Andrew Flintoff with 37 wickets, and both Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Singh, along with R Ashwin, each with 35 wickets.

Jadeja's most significant wicket of the day occurred earlier when he successfully trapped Joe Root, who was playing his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup, in front for 19 runs. This marked the fourth occasion on which Jadeja dismissed Root in ODIs, placing him second only to New Zealand's Trent Boult in this regard.

On a hot and sunny afternoon, England chose to bat first but faced a series of regular dismissals, ultimately being bowled out in 47.4 overs. This was despite contributions from skipper Jos Buttler, who scored 52, and Jacob Bethell, who added 51 runs.

Pace spearhead Mohammed Shami began with a maiden over, while Phil Salt launched an aggressive assault against Rana, hitting three sixes and two fours in a 26-run sixth over.

England's first wicket fell at 75 due to a mid-pitch mix-up between Ben Duckett and Salt, resulting in Salt being run out for 43 runs.

Rana made a comeback after a remarkable backwards running catch by fellow debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, which secured the bowler his first ODI wicket, dismissing Duckett for 32.

Rana struck again just three balls later, with Harry Brook caught behind for a duck, edging a rising delivery to wicketkeeper KL Rahul.

England found themselves at 77-3 after 10 overs.

Joe Root and Buttler sought to stabilize the innings with a 34-run partnership, but Jadeja's left-arm spin proved decisive in breaking through.

Buttler remained resolute, forming a 59-run partnership with the left-handed Bethell as they navigated a disciplined bowling attack.

Buttler reached his fifty but soon fell victim to a mistimed pull, offering a catch to Hardik Pandya at short fine leg off Axar Patel.

Wickets continued to fall as Rana dismissed Liam Livingstone, caught behind for five runs, and Shami bowled Brydon Carse for 10.

Bethell achieved his half-century before Jadeja had him lbw.

Number ten Jofra Archer contributed an unbeaten 21 runs off 18 balls, but England, having lost the preceding T20 series 4-1, could not manage to bat through their allotted 50 overs.
