6 days ago | 5 Views
Jack Draper achieved a remarkable victory over Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 in their men’s singles semi-final at Indian Wells on Sunday. This thrilling match featured a significant VAR controversy, with the British tennis star emerging victorious.
A contentious moment arose in the third set when the score was tied at 1-1. The chair umpire ruled Draper out for hitting the ball after it had bounced twice. However, Draper requested a video review, leading the umpire to order a replay of the point due to the confusion it caused for Alcaraz. Unwilling to accept the initial ruling, Draper then sought a review of Alcaraz’s position at the time of the call, resulting in the point being awarded to him.

Following the match, Draper addressed the VAR controversy, describing it as a "challenging situation." He remarked, "We do have the review system in place, which is beneficial. It was indeed a difficult moment, as I felt I made contact with the ball, and I also recognized that Carlos had just reached it but missed it wide. I requested Mohamed to review the footage to determine if it was evident that I had touched the ball. However, it seemed that Carlos did not have a solid opportunity to play the ball and ended up missing it."
Draper was also part of a similar incident last year when he faced Felix Auger-Aliassime. In that match, the ball rebounded off his racket and struck the court before crossing over to his opponent's side while he was on match point. The chair umpire did not call the double bounce, allowing the British player to secure the victory. He later admitted uncertainty about the events that transpired.
Draper is set to compete against Holger Rune in the final on Monday. Rune advanced to this stage by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
