"J&K Captain Discusses Umpiring Issues as Iyer and Rahane Get Second Chances in Ranji Trophy"
2 months ago | 5 Views
The Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir has once again raised concerns regarding the standards of umpiring in domestic cricket. On the second day at the BKC Ground in Mumbai, Shreyas Iyer evaded a caught-behind dismissal despite a clear edge that reached Jammu and Kashmir wicketkeeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan. Paras Dogra, the captain of J&K, expressed that the outcome might have differed had the umpires been more vigilant.
The edge produced a distinct sound, yet umpire S Ravi appeared to overlook it. This incident occurred during the 16th over of the innings.
Dogra further remarked that umpiring mistakes have persisted for many years, leaving players with little recourse.
“This issue has been ongoing for years, and there is not much we can do about it. Umpires are human and can err. However, had they been slightly more observant, it could have made the game more enjoyable. Nevertheless, it is part of the sport, which is why the DRS exists,” Dogra stated, according to Sportstar.
Additionally, there was a notable incident involving Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was summoned back to the field after having returned to the dressing room. The right-handed batsman was adjudged to have been caught down the leg side off a delivery from Umar Nazir, which was later ruled a no-ball, leading to Rahane being called back after a delay of several minutes.
'Would have been good to have DRS'
The J&K captain, Paras Dogra, also feels that having a Decision-Review System (DRS) would have been good, but nothing can be done since it is not currently present.
For the uninitiated, over the last five years, the DRS has been used only for the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy.
“It would have been a good experience to have DRS here, but we can’t control it since 10-15 games are happening simultaneously. So, it does not make any difference since everybody is going through this,” said Paras Dogra.
Talking about the Mumbai vs J&K match, the former is on top after Shardul Thakur's century in the second innings. Mumbai's lead is nearing the 200-run mark. At one stage, Mumbai were 101/7 but Shardul and Tanush Kotian led Mumbai's fightback.
“Shardul’s was one of the best innings I have seen. The ball stopped moving after a point, so that had an impact. That’s when we tried doing something different and tried out bouncers, which did not work. But Shardul played well," said Dogra.
