Ishan Kishan's Dismissal: Did the Umpire Adhere to the Regulations? An Analysis of Last Night's IPL 2025 Incident
10 days ago | 5 Views
In one of the most peculiar incidents of IPL 2025 to date, Ishan Kishan became the focal point of a dramatic and highly unconventional dismissal during the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday.
While facing Deepak Chahar, Ishan attempted to glance a delivery that veered down the leg side. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton successfully gathered the ball, yet neither he nor Chahar made an appeal for a dismissal. In fact, on-field umpire Vinod Seshan seemed ready to indicate a wide ball. However, the situation changed instantaneously.
To the surprise of all, Ishan began to walk off the field, suggesting that he had edged the ball, despite the absence of any appeal from the fielding team. Observing Ishan's departure, the umpire, rather than adhering to his initial wide call or taking a moment to confirm the edge, swiftly raised his finger and ruled him out.
What does the law state?
The Replays for the dismissal painted a different narrative. The UltraEdge displayed no spike, no variation, and clearly demonstrated that Ishan hadn’t made contact with the ball.
The incident became even more contentious because the batter wasn’t reinstated, even though MCC’s Law 31. 7 permits umpires to step in if a player departs under a “misapprehension of being out. ”
According to the law: “An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball… and shall recall the batter. ”
The regulation also allows for this intervention until the next ball is bowled, unless the dismissal was the last one of the innings.
In Ishan's situation, rather than adhering to the law and providing the player an opportunity to reconsider or review the dismissal, the umpire upheld the decision based solely on the batter’s body language. The replay evidence, on the other hand, contradicted any idea of an edge.
Even former cricketers were puzzled by the entire situation, criticizing not only the umpire but also Ishan for departing despite the presence of DRS. The Sunrisers were already in a difficult position when Ishan came to the crease, having lost Travis Head for a four-ball duck. The Indian batter's dismissal initiated a batting collapse which left SRH struggling at 13/4 in just 4. 1 overs.
Heinrich Klaasen (71 off 44 deliveries), however, rejuvenated the SRH innings with Abhinav Manohar (43 off 37 balls) providing support to guide the team to a commendable score of 143/8 in 20 overs.
