Ishan Kishan expressed his gratitude to captain Pat Cummins after scoring his first IPL century, highlighting how Cummins allowed him the freedom to play his game. Kishan kicked off his IPL journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday against the Rajasthan Royals, making a memorable debut as he became the season's first centurion. He dominated the Royals' bowlers, finishing with an impressive unbeaten score of 106.
The SRH management showed their trust in Kishan by sending him in to bat at number 3, even with two left-handed openers already in the lineup. His remarkable innings included 11 fours and six sixes, helping Sunrisers Hyderabad set a massive total of 286/6 in their 20 overs.
After the first innings, Kishan reflected on his century and acknowledged the team's support.
"It feels great; I've been waiting for this moment. I wanted to achieve it last season, but I'm thrilled to have my first hundred now. The team has believed in me, and I aim to give my best for them," Kishan shared with the broadcasters.
After spending seven years with the Mumbai Indians, Kishan found a new home at SRH, who signed him for a staggering INR 11.25 crore.
He also commended captain Pat Cummins for fostering a relaxed atmosphere within the team, emphasizing that there’s no pressure on players regarding their performances.
"The captain, especially Pat, gives everyone a lot of freedom. It doesn’t matter if you score big or get out early; as long as you’re contributing to the team, that’s what counts. That’s the kind of confidence every player needs," he added.
"When Abhishek and Head kicked things off…"
Kishan praised openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma for laying a solid foundation for the team.
"When Abhishek and Head were at the crease, they really boosted our confidence in the dugout. The pitch was looking promising, and we were just focused on putting them under pressure," he shared.
He also reminded his bowlers to keep things straightforward and focus on their line and length to limit the Royals' batting strength.
"We need to be sharp with our bowling and stick to the basics. The Rajasthan batters are skilled, but if we hit our spots and follow our game plan, we should do well," he wrapped up.
