Inzamam Takes a Dig at Gavaskar: Claims He 'Fled Sharjah' to Avoid Pakistan Clash

Inzamam-ul-Haq, the esteemed former cricketer from Pakistan, has launched a pointed critique of Sunil Gavaskar, responding vehemently to the Indian cricket icon's assertion that Pakistan is incapable of defeating India's second-string team. Following India's six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy two Sundays ago, Gavaskar emphasized the significant disparity that has developed between the cricketing standards of the two nations, noting India's recent dominance over their traditional rivals. Despite Pakistan's historical advantage in head-to-head encounters, they have suffered defeats in their last six international matches against India.

While Inzamam has not shied away from criticizing the performances of Mohammad Rizwan and the Pakistan team, he contends that Gavaskar's comments crossed a line. He urged Gavaskar to consider the historical context of the rivalry between India and Pakistan, suggesting that the former cricketer had previously avoided a match against Pakistan.

"India played well and won the match, but Mr Gavaskar should also review the statistics. He once left Sharjah to avoid facing Pakistan. He is our senior and deserves our respect, yet such remarks about another country are inappropriate. While it is acceptable to commend your team, disparaging comments about others are in poor taste," Inzamam stated during an interview on a local news channel.

"I urge him to examine the statistics, and he will understand Pakistan's standing. I am genuinely disappointed by his statement. He was a distinguished and respected cricketer, but such comments only tarnish his legacy. He should exercise more restraint in his words."

What did Gavaskar say

Gavaskar remarked, "I believe that a B team from India could certainly challenge Pakistan effectively. As for a C team, I have my doubts. However, a B team would pose a significant challenge for Pakistan in their current state," which sparked some controversy surrounding his remarks. Inzamam was not the only one to respond; former Pakistan coach Jason Gillespie also dismissed Gavaskar's comments as 'nonsense'.

The Champions Trophy represented the return of an ICC event to Pakistan after a 29-year hiatus, the last being the co-hosting of the 1996 World Cup. Unfortunately, the outcome was not memorable, as Pakistan did not advance to the semi-finals, suffering defeats against New Zealand and India, while their match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to rain. In essence, Pakistan participated in only one match on home soil—the tournament opener against New Zealand in Lahore on February 19.
