Seventeen years after the notorious 'slapgate' incident involving Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, the former Indian off-spinner has publicly apologized for his actions that day. In a post on his X account, responding to a video of the incident, Harbhajan acknowledged his wrongdoing and expressed regret for his behavior.
“This wasn’t right bhai,” Harbhajan commented on the video shared by a user. “It was my mistake. I shouldn’t have done this.”
He further stated, “But Galti hui Insaan hu Bhagwaan nahi,” emphasizing his humanity and asking for understanding and forgiveness for his actions.
Initially, Harbhajan had expressed his admiration for the celebrations following South Australia’s remarkable victory in the Sheffield Shield, which prompted him to reflect on his past mistake.
Sreesanth, Harbhajan on better terms in present day
Currently, Sreesanth and Harbhajan appear to have mended their relationship. The 'slapgate' incident was a significant topic during the inaugural season, as the seasoned Indian spinner clashed with the emerging fast bowler. Footage from the event showed Sreesanth, then with Kings XI Punjab, in tears and being comforted by teammates like Kumar Sangakkara.
As a consequence of his actions, Harbhajan, who was the captain of the Mumbai Indians at the time, was suspended from the remainder of that year's tournament. He has since apologized multiple times for his conduct towards Sreesanth, expressing shame over his decisions that day.
Despite their past confrontation, Sreesanth has indicated that he holds great respect for Harbhajan, revealing that his tears were more a reflection of his disappointment in letting down someone he viewed as an elder brother, rather than stemming from physical pain.
Sreesanth acknowledged his involvement in the altercation, revealing that Harbhajan had requested him to monitor his aggression towards the Mumbai Indians team. Recognized for his fiery bowling style and his tendency to express his emotions openly, Sreesanth has frequently demonstrated a more vulnerable aspect of his personality, particularly when reflecting on his relationships with former teammates.
