Sourav Ganguly lauds India
Following India's victory, Sourav Ganguly expressed his admiration for the team's performance and highlighted their impressive track record in ICC global tournaments in recent years.
"India secured the last T20 World Cup title in 2024 and reached the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2023. This team is exceptionally strong in white-ball cricket, regardless of the opponent. They possess the ability to overcome any challenge," he remarked.
Ganguly also singled out Mohammed Shami for commendation, noting that the pacer had faced a significant injury period, making his return particularly noteworthy. "Injuries are a common occurrence for fast bowlers; it is an inherent aspect of their careers. He has contributed to numerous victories for India alongside Jasprit Bumrah. He is an outstanding bowler," he stated.
In the match, India successfully defended a target of 250 runs, dismissing New Zealand for 205 in 45.3 overs, with Varun Chakaravarthy achieving a remarkable five-wicket haul. This marked only Chakaravarthy's second ODI appearance, making him the earliest Indian bowler to claim five wickets in this format, surpassing the previous record held by Stuart Binny (6/4) against Bangladesh in 2014 during his third ODI. Additionally, this match witnessed the first occurrence of two five-wicket hauls in a single Champions Trophy game. Kuldeep Yadav also contributed by taking two wickets for India, while Kane Williamson scored a half-century for New Zealand, making 81 runs off 120 balls.
Initially, Shreyas Iyer's innings of 79 runs from 98 balls helped India set a total of 249/9 in 50 overs, establishing a target of 250 runs. Matt Henry, on the other hand, claimed five wickets for New Zealand.
In his post-match comments, India captain Rohit Sharma stated, "It is crucial to conclude on a positive note. New Zealand is a formidable team that has been performing well. Achieving a favorable result was essential; we executed a flawless game. After being at 30/3, it was vital to form a partnership, and I believe we reached a commendable total. Our bowling quality is sufficient to defend that score."
