Sydney: Rishabh Pant endured a series of painful blows, being struck on the helmet, thigh, and left bicep, which bore a significant bruise, along with a painful hit to the groin that left him gasping for breath. Despite these challenges, he attempted to persevere, ultimately finishing as the top scorer with a modest 40 runs off 98 balls before succumbing to the relentless assault.

"This is the first time I've experienced such a barrage, but in cricket, one cannot anticipate everything," Pant remarked at the conclusion of play on Friday. "Every player encounters a first-time experience at some point in their career, and today was mine."

The day was marked by physical and mental challenges. The collective morale of the nation was rattled when Rohit Sharma was omitted from the lineup for this crucial match, contrary to claims of him being rested. As wickets fell one after another to a formidable Australian bowling attack, it became evident that the Indian team was gradually being dismantled, session by session, on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This stark reality was what coach Gautam Gambhir sought to address prior to the match.

As India struggled to post a total of 185 all out on a challenging green pitch at the SCG, it often felt reminiscent of previous encounters in the series. KL Rahul was dismissed after hitting a four-ball directly to a fielder at square leg, Yashasvi Jaiswal edged a delivery to third slip off Boland, and Shubman Gill fell in the last over before tea, while Virat Kohli edged a ball outside off stump. The lack of change in performance should indeed be a cause for concern for Gambhir.

In response, Australia concluded the day at 9/1, with Usman Khawaja being dismissed off the final delivery, providing a glimpse of what might unfold on Day 2. However, there remains the possibility that the sun could shine, and the pitch may not behave as expected.

Throughout the series, India's batting has been a persistent issue; nevertheless, they continue to select six bowlers instead of adding an extra batsman. Logic would suggest that the team management should address the weaknesses in their lineup, yet they appear to be attempting to navigate through turbulent waters with their bowling contingent.
