India's Leadership Under Fire: Gambhir's Critique on Rohit & Dravid

India will proceed without Jasprit Bumrah in their quest to secure the Champions Trophy for the first time since 2013. The fast bowler, widely regarded as one of the best in all formats, was officially removed from the squad on Tuesday evening after the senior BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, decided against risking him for the entire tournament without prior match practice. Bumrah has been sidelined since sustaining a back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney. His absence is a significant setback for India's Champions Trophy aspirations, even before the tournament has commenced. However, the decision regarding his replacement has raised questions.
Agarkar and his committee opted for the relatively inexperienced Harshit Rana over Mohammed Siraj, who participated in all matches during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Siraj has been designated as a travelling reserve. There were strong indications that Rana was favored over Siraj for Bumrah's replacement, particularly when captain Rohit Sharma mentioned Rana's name during the squad announcement press conference last month.
Additionally, India has dropped opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, substituting him with spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, despite already having four spinners in their lineup. The 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy now includes five spin-bowling options—Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar—while only three pacers are included: Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit, with Hardik Pandya serving as the sole seam-bowling all-rounder.
Given that the pitches in the UAE—where India is the only team playing all its matches at a single venue (Dubai) in this edition of the Champions Trophy—are known to favor spinners, particularly as the ball ages, the decision to include five spin-bowling options has perplexed fans. This sentiment was echoed on social media, where many expressed their discontent following the announcement of India's revised team late on Tuesday night.
Currently, Chakaravarthy stands out as India's premier white-ball spinner; however, it is important to recognize Kuldeep Yadav's exceptional performance across all formats in 2023, which should not be overshadowed by recent trends. The likelihood of including both Kuldeep and Chakaravarthy in the playing eleven seems low, as India will prioritize all-rounders to maintain team balance.
A fan expressed significant dissatisfaction with the decision made by India’s captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir to substitute Jaiswal with Chakaravarthy. The fan contended that the more logical change would have been to replace Sundar with Chakaravarthy.
"This selection process is quite disorganized.
1) Five spinners included in a 15-member squad.
2) Harshit Rana taking the place of Jasprit Bumrah instead of Siraj.
3) Jaiswal omitted from the squad.
It would have been straightforward to replace Sundar with Jaiswal. Yet, we are left with a captain and coach duo that seems to have lost their way," he remarked.
India is set to face England in the third and final ODI in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. This match will be their last before the Champions Trophy, commencing on February 19. The tournament will kick off with hosts Pakistan competing against New Zealand. India will begin their campaign against Bangladesh the following day in Dubai, followed by a match against Pakistan on February 23, and concluding the group stage against New Zealand on March 2.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals.
