India's Fielding Woes: Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma Among Those to Drop Crucial Catches

India didn't quite show up in the field during the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. The Indian players had a tough time catching the ball, dropping four crucial chances after New Zealand's captain, Mitchell Santner, chose to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The first dropped catch happened in the seventh over when Mohammed Shami couldn't hold onto the ball during the follow-through. He also hurt his finger when Rachin Ravindra hit it right at him. Shami tried to catch it with both hands but ended up letting it slip. The physio had to step in to wrap up his hand.
Ravindra caught a break again when Shreyas Iyer let another catch slip through his fingers in the eighth over. It was a tough one, as Iyer had to run quite a bit to get to the ball, and while he got there, he ultimately dropped it, giving Ravindra another chance. Unfortunately for Ravindra, he couldn't capitalize on it and was out for 37 in the 11th over, thanks to Kuldeep Yadav.
Then there was Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who also had a moment to forget when he dropped a catch from Daryl Mitchell while he was on 38. Mitchell pulled the ball towards mid-wicket, but Rohit just couldn't hang on.
Shubman Gill teamed up with his captain in the following over when he couldn't snag a catch from Glenn Phillips at mid-wicket, even after diving for it. The 25-year-old was clearly frustrated with himself for missing what should have been an easy catch. Luckily, Varun Chakaravarthy came to the rescue by dismissing Phillips a couple of overs later for 34 runs.
India ranks third-lowest in catch efficiency rate for CT 2025
India has had a rough time in the Champions Trophy, dropping 9 catches so far, which is the highest for any team in the tournament. Their catch efficiency rate stands at 70 percent, making it the third lowest in CT 2025. Only Pakistan (60) and Bangladesh (66.6) have worse stats than them.
