India's Cricket Stars Must Justify Absences from Bilateral Series with Medical Reasons

The past few months have proven to be challenging for Indian cricket. The losses in the Test series against New Zealand at home, followed by a defeat against Australia in their own territory, have raised concerns among the senior officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

On Saturday, a review meeting regarding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India lost 1-3, took place at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. This meeting was attended by the beleaguered captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and other senior BCCI officials.

While the board appears to have opted against an immediate reaction to these recent defeats, it has been determined that players will no longer have the liberty to skip series at their discretion.

As reported by the news agency PTI, players will be required to provide valid medical justifications if they wish to withdraw from any bilateral series in the future.

'Do not expect a hurried decision'

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma underperformed with the bat during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, struggling to accumulate runs against Australia. Additionally, there have been indications of discontent within the dressing room.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and his coaching team are facing significant backlash following the recent Test series defeats to New Zealand and Australia. These losses have marked the first occasion in which India has failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Nevertheless, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted against making any swift decisions. According to PTI, BCCI officials, including Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar, and Gambhir, convened to analyze the shortcomings of the Australian tour.

"There was an in-depth discussion regarding the performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, identifying the issues and the necessary corrections. However, do not anticipate any hasty decisions from the new BCCI administration," a source informed PTI.

India's next Test series is scheduled for June 2025, when they will visit England for a five-match series. Rohit Sharma, who withdrew from the Sydney Test after scoring a mere 31 runs across five innings, is uncertain for this upcoming series.

There is growing speculation that the 37-year-old may not be included in the squad for that series. Virat Kohli, who accumulated only 190 runs in five Tests despite scoring a century in Perth, is also facing scrutiny, and his future remains uncertain.
