India's Batting Collapse Frustrates Gavaskar; KL Rahul's Dismissal Under Scrutiny

India has clinched the ODI series with one match left, thanks to two impressive victories. However, in both games, their batting fell apart at the end of the chase, even when they were close to winning. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar was commentating during the second ODI when Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer got out, and KL Rahul also fell while attempting to pull a short ball.

“They’ve got it under control. India doesn’t need to do anything reckless right now. Just 30 more runs needed. They can take these runs in singles if they have to,” Gavaskar was heard saying just as Jamie Overton was gearing up to bowl. The England bowler delivered a short ball, and Rahul tried to pull it but misjudged its speed. The ball reached him just as he was completing his shot, hitting his glove and going to wicketkeeper Phil Salt. Rahul ended up with just 10 runs off 14 balls.

Rahul's been having a rough time at the plate lately

India was cruising at 220/3 when Rohit got out after an impressive 119 off 90 balls, putting them on track to chase down 304. But then, things took a turn, and they stumbled to 286/6, losing three wickets between the 37th and 42nd overs. In the end, India managed to clinch the match by four wickets, which was the same margin as their victory in the first ODI.

This collapse caught attention in the 2nd ODI, with former head coach Ravi Shastri commenting that the team might need to rethink their middle-order batting positions. He also raised eyebrows about the decision to leave Rishabh Pant out of the lineup.

Rahul has been picked as India's wicketkeeper-batter over Pant, thanks to his much better record as a middle-order batsman. Pant has batted seven times at No. 5 in ODIs, scoring 310 runs at an average of 44.28, including three half-centuries. While that's solid, Rahul boasts an average of 57.22 in that same position over 30 ODIs, with 1259 runs, including two centuries and nine half-centuries. However, he hasn't really found his form in this series, managing just two runs in the first ODI.
