Pakistan is poised to have an opportunity to seek retribution for their loss to India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which resulted in their elimination from the home tournament. This chance arises as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) plans to schedule the 2025 Asia Cup for September. In consideration of the upcoming T20 World Cup set for 2026, the Asia Cup will adopt the T20 format.

As reported by Cricbuzz, fans around the globe may have the opportunity to witness up to three matches between India and Pakistan later this year. The Asia Cup is anticipated to take place from the second to the fourth week of September.

The 17th edition of this continental tournament, which will feature 19 matches, was originally intended to be hosted in India. However, due to the current dynamics between India and Pakistan, the ACC is likely to select a neutral venue. While the specific location has not yet been confirmed, officials are considering options in Sri Lanka and the UAE. Nevertheless, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will retain its status as the host.

ACC to avoid Champions Trophy fiasco

A significant decision made by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), as disclosed in a document obtained by Cricbuzz, indicates that the board is likely to circumvent the complications that arose during the lead-up to the Champions Trophy concerning India and Pakistan.

Due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not receiving approval from the Indian government, the team led by Rohit Sharma was unable to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. Consequently, after extensive discussions, Dubai was selected as the venue for all of India's matches. To prevent a recurrence of such controversies from the outset, the ACC is eager to establish a neutral venue for all 19 matches of the Asia Cup.

The tournament will feature eight teams: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, Hong Kong, India, and Pakistan. Notably absent will be Nepal, which participated in the 2023 edition but did not qualify this time. The eight teams will be organized into two groups, with the top two teams advancing to the Super Four, leading to the final match. India currently holds the title, having triumphed over Sri Lanka in the final of the 2023 tournament.
