Marnus uses his bat to stop the ball from hitting his body, but the moment he does it, Rana goes up in a half-hearted appeal. He perhaps felt there for a moment that Marnus was obstructing the field but soon realised that the batter was inside his crease. He is still batting on 1 after facing 39 balls as we speak.

Six overs, two maidens, three wickets for nine runs. Incredible stuff. The ball takes Marnus Labuschagne's bat's outside edge and seemed to nestle into Kohli's hands nicely, but as the fielders went up in a bit of a premature celebration, Kohli slipped up and lost control. Immediately he says no and what a miss this is. Could have had Austrlia two down. Bumrah looks up towards the heavens.

As the ball rapped the batter on the pads, there was some confusion with folks behind the wicket hearing two sounds. Rishabh Pant wasn't convinced, Bumrah was in two minds. But Kohli saw and sensed something no one else did. "Ley ley," he says, meaning "TAKE IT", and boy what a call it turned out to be.

Hazlewood has finished the innings with figures of 4/29 in 13 overs.

Well, if India are not able to make the most of the conditions the way Australia have and if they do ease off in any way, they are in for a hard, hard Test in Perth. Nitish Kumar Reddy has shown his potential though and India would be very happy with the fact that they seem to have a strong prospect to fill up that spot which Hardik Pandya would've filled had his body allowed him to do it.

Cummins bowls a short one to end that over, Reddy decides he has had enough and upper cuts it for a six over slips. As you do. Reddy has moved to 34 off 54 but now Bumrah has to face Hazlewood.

It went quickly towards slip and so McSweeney dives and parries at the ball at gully after it had gone behind him somewhat. It takes the edge and flew fast to Smith above his head. He is a very good slip fielder though and he demonstrates that by making that catch look easy. India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well, Rishabh Pant has been playing Test cricket for six years and so one would think that we would get used to something like this by now. But nope. Pat Cummins charges in last ball of he 42nd over, full delivery, Pant moves all the way across so quickly he just loses his balance completely, but who cares? He has middled that and it travels all the way over deep backward square leg for a six! That is a no-look six, simply because Pant was rolling on the ground when the ball was soaring over the boundary. He moves to 39 off 69, Reddy on 22 off 35, India finally have some kind of a partnership going.

Reddy reverse sweeps Lyon for the umpteenth time second ball of the 40th, the batters run two and that brings up 100. He then defends the next ball, works the fourth ball off the pads leg side and then defends the fifth ball off the back foot. Then Reddy whips out the reverse sweep again last ball, it goes through point for a four. Reddy has moved to 21 off 31, Pant on 28 off 61 balls.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well when Pant is out there, chances like these are bound to come and this time, the Australian captain cannot hold on. Fourth ball of the 39th over from Starc, Pant looks to smash the pacer down the ground. It goes high up in the air, Cummins was always trying to reach it and then can't quite judge it, makes a meal of it. Pant is on 27 off 60 at the end of that over, Reddy on 15 off 26 balls.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Australia appeal for caught behind, the umpire doesn't give it and they decide against reviewing it. Had they done it, though, they would have seen the back of Reddy. Starc continues in the 37th, Pant pushes the fourth ball to cover for a single. Reddy seemed to be trying to get inside the line of the ball trying a flick but ended up sort of half leaving it. The bowler and the keeper appeal, but they don't seem to be quite sure when discussing with Cummins. Replays come immediately after the DRS countdown ends and that shows that there was glove. Reddy takes a single off the last ball and Starc tells him: "You've got a good poker face haven't ya? You must be good at poker?" Ah drama.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well India have stacked batters until No.8 but this latest collapse means that Nitish Kumar Reddy is their last recognised batter and we are in just the 33rd over. Sunil Gavaskar makes a point in the commentary box that the Indian batters have been punished for their lack of backfoot play, with the advent of limited overs cricket making it a habit for them to stay committed on the front foot. It meant that a player of Virat Kohli's stature had no answers when Josh Hazlewood suddenly went short. Washington pulls out because of that, by which point Marsh was into his delivery stride. He walks back with a smile and raises his hands in playful frustration towards his Delhi Capitals teammate Pant, who then apologises with a chuckle. Pant is on 17 off 24 at the start of that over, Sundar on four off nine.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: There is the Pant we are all familiar with. He has been cautious today, having made just 10 runs in 32 balls at the start of the 29th over from Cummins. Washington Sundar gets off strike second ball and then Pant comes charging outside the crease to the third ball, absolutely slices the air around his bat in half with a big heave. It takes an edge and soars over slips, takes a few bounces before going to the boundary for a four. He gets off strike fifth ball and then a dot. Pant isn 15 off 35, Sundar on one off four. We can ask a thousand questions on whether Rahul was out or not but the fact remains that the Indian batters didn't have any answers to Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. Starc has figures of 2/10 in eight overs, Hazlewood has recorded 2/10 in eight overs as well. Cummins has returned figures of 0/23.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Oh KL Rahul is absolutely miffed by that. Australia celebrate more than they appeal second ball as the ball flies to the wicketkeeper off the second ball of the 23rd by Mitchell Starc. The umpire gives not out and Cummins takes the review. There is a spike when the ball is close to the edge but there is no offside angle which may have given clarity. That is because it wasn't quite clear whether the ball had really taken any of the bat when that spike came. It would've been a feather edge which should've only produced a tiny spike but then this was a big bunt. Moreover, Rahul's bat seems to hit his pads almost at the same time of all that. But with no off side angle available, the third umpire decides that there was a spike and asks a rather surprised-looking Richard Kettleborough to reverse his decision. Well it had just looked like they were getting a move on in the previous over, Kohli with a couple of imperious drives off back-to-back balls, gets three off each. Then Rahul sends the last ball through the off side for a four. But Kohli had set up shop on front foot and Hazlewood just tests that with a perfect short delivery, it climbs on the former India captain who fends at it and edges it to Khawaja at first slip.

It has been relentless from Australia but India have also missed out on some scoring opportunities, particularly Devdutt Padikkal. India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Starc is not being replaced by anyone, he is bowling his fifth over and the only run that comes in it, quite frustratingly for Padikkal, is a wide he bowled third ball. Padikkal did miss out on a couple of dead straight deliveries from Starc in that over though. Starc then bangs it in fifth ball, Padikal rides the bounce and sends it to gully one bounce. Still no runs. Then a pin-point yorker from Starc, Padikkal defends it to mid off. He is on nought off 17 balls now, Rahul on eight off 30.

More away swing fourth ball and Padikkal is beaten on a booming straight drive. He then lets go of the fifth ball and defends the sixth to mid on. He is on nought after 11, Rahul on six off 24.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Starc vs Rahul is turning out to be quite a contest. Starc has been enticing Rahul into playing a big offside driving, gets the third and fourth balls to move away from the batter last minute. But Rahul is not in T20 mode, doesn't even bother being too agressive, he lets the third ball go and defends the fourth. He then hits the fifth down to the ground to slip and then takes a single off the last ball. Good stuff thus far from Rahul. However, McDonald also said that the ground staff were well on course to ensuring that the pitch is “rock hard” come Friday.
