India vs Australia 1st Test Highlights: Bumrah, Rana, Siraj leave AUS gasping for air, hosts trail by 83 runs at stumps

IND vs AUS Live Score: Indeed! 17 wickets fall on Day 1 of the Test itself. If you thought India were forced to play catch-up after getting bowled out for 150, you had another thing coming. Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and the rest did brilliantly to cut open India's batting, but the way Jasprit Bumrah and his fellow quicks have responded has been outstanding. Nothing much from the batters but had it not been for Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy's 37 and 41, things would have looked a lot worse. Nonetheless, it's been a day that has belonged to fast bowlers and tomorrow is expected to be no better. Join us Saturday morning for what promises to be another riveting and most probably the penultimate day of the Test match. CIAO!

IND vs AUS Live Score: Stumps on Day 1! Jasprit Bumrah almost picks up another one, foxing Mitchell Marsh with a slower one. Concedes five runs to wrap the proceedings up on the opening day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia finish on 67/7, trailing India by 83 runs. And what an extraordinary day it has been.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Captain gets captain! Fourth wicket for Jasprit Bumrah as Pat Cummins edges to Rishabh Pant. Not sure why Cummins is shaking his head though. Nothing much he could have done. Or could he? Perhaps leaving the ball would have been ideal. Then again, hindsight never works, does it? Australia 7 for 59.

IND vs AUS Live Score: He has moved quickly to 17 off 25 balls with three boundaries, two of them coming off the last couple of balls. First, a glance through the leg side and then a spectacular uppercut. On both occasions, Harshit has strayed away from his ideal line and length and has to play the price. Australia now trail by less than 100. India wouldn’t want that to be trimmed down to 50, for sure.

IND vs AUS Live Score: He may have failed with the bat, but on the field, Virat Kohli is exuding captaincy vibes. He is constantly upping the spirits of his bowlers, and even walked up to the umpires twice. Just as Siraj completed his last over, he told him 'Yehi daal. Ek aur ball' (Bowl in this exact area, once more). And of course, earlier, he was the one who was sure that McSweeney was out. Still surprised that India are showing the same spark as they did six years ago?

IND vs AUS Live Score: And four of them… off the bat of Alex Carey. While Bumrah and Rana have grabbed most of the attention, Siraj has quietly gone about his business, bowling four maidens in a row. With 20 overs left in the day with the half an hour extension coming up shortly, India can smell blood here. With five down, they'd want to pick up at least two more wickets, if not more, one of them hoping to be of Labuschagne, who is grinding it out for 2 off 51 balls.

IND vs AUS Live Score: India lost their fifth wicket for 59, Australia have reached that stage with 21 fewer runs. What allowed India to recover from 59/5 to put 150 runs was Rishabh Pant's counter-attacking innings. Aaron Finch recently said that a lot will depend on how the wicketkeepers – Pant and Alex Carey – bat. Pant did his bit. Can Carey do the same? India are going all out. Here comes Jasprit Bumrah for his second spell.

IND vs AUS Live Score: One more down, India would be hoping as Marsh edges to KL Rahul, who at third slip takes the catch, but since it’s not quite clear, the third umpire has referred the decision upstairs. Soft signal is out, so it's got to take a lot to turn it around. No such worries for India though, as the replay suggests Rahul had his palm underneath the ball in control. This could be the fifth Australian wicket to go down. AND IT DOES as OUT appears on the big screen. Marsh gone for 6 off 19 and Australia are 38/5

IND vs AUS Live Score: Marnus Labuschagne defends Harshit Rana with a straight bat and as the ball rolls back, the India pacer grabs it and throws it back. Marnus uses his bat to stop the ball from hitting his body, but the moment he does it, Rana goes up in a half-hearted appeal. He perhaps felt there for a moment that Marnus was obstructing the field but soon realised that the batter was inside his crease. He is still batting on 1 after facing 39 balls as we speak.

IND vs AUS Live Score: There's only one Jasprit Bumrah! If there was one man who could bring India back into this Test match, it was him. And boy, what a response it has been from him. Six overs, two maidens, three wickets for nine runs. Incredible stuff. More importantly, his infectious energy and electricity have rubbed off brilliantly on his fellow Indian pacers, with Harshit Rana looking equally menacing. Change of ends for Mohammed Siraj, who is in search of his first wicket.

Australia 37/4 in 16 overs.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Mitchell Marsh times the ball exquisitely as Australia get a much-needed boundary. Six fours in the innings thus far, which is not bad considering the fire and intensity with which the Indians are bowling. Down the wicket and there wasn't much the fielder could do to stop that one. Rana delivers a jaffa, the next ball, to keep Marsh alive and alert. Australia go to 37/4, and with that, drinks have been called for.

IND vs AUS Live Score: The Perth Stadium gives a round of applause to Marnus Labuschagne, who is finally off the mark after 24 balls. Brings back memories of Rahul Dravid, who at WACA – not too far from here – went without scoring a run for 40 balls during the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Australians need such doggedness to continue of they are to put up a fight with the bat.

IND vs AUS Live Score: BOOM! Round the wickets and the stumps go rattling. And it's the danger man Travis Head who has to go back. India have Australia on the mat at 31/4. This is a strong comeback from India with the ball after they looked clueless with the bat. But that's what Perth does to you. Australia at 31/4, are in a worse situation than India. With the pitch expected to behave similarly, this one may go down to the wires although there's still plenty of time left.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Is this heading towards a Day 4? Well, looks unlikely at this stage. We all wondered if the 1st Test and the IPL auctions may collide, but going by the fact that 13 wickets have already fallen, it would take a remarkable effort with the bat by one of the two things to prevent a Day 3 finish to this Test match. There are still plenty of overs left, which means that play will surely be extended by half an hour. India would want to settle for no less than two wickets.

IND vs AUS Live Score: After a maiden first over in Test cricket, Harshit Rana gives Travis Head just a little room but it's enough for him to cash in. Cuts the ball for a boundary and gets off the mark. That's how he plays. India have seen enough of Travis Head in the last three ICC matches, they don't want any more of it. And just as we speak, Rana produces another short and wide ball which Head smashes for FOUR.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Twice in two overs has Marnus Labuschagne copped a couple of heavy blows to his body. If in the previous over, it was the big man, the debutant Harshit Rana, this time it's Bumrah. Challenging conditions for batting here. Padikkal went 23 balls for 0; Labuschagne has already faced 20… without opening his account. IT'S THAT TOUGH! Imagine if India had Mohammed Shami in there too.

IND vs AUS Live Score: See it to believe it folks. Jasprit Bumrah is all over the Australian top order. First Khawaja, then Steve Smith out LBW for a golden duck. Bumrah misses the hat-trick as Travis Head barely survives but the best bowler in in full flow.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Edged and Kohli grabs it safely this time at second slip. We told you it might just work and Bumrah has responded. The ball angled in nicely and Khawaja's defence just not strong enough. Flies off the outside edge and Kohli makes no mistake. Australia lose their 2nd wicket for 19.

IND vs AUS Live Score: The ball is still new and sensing the opportunity, Bumrah has made a wide call to go round the wicket to Usman Khawaja. Last over, Khawaja pulled Siraj for a boundary – just some slight room provided – but the Indian captain now wants to close it down and cramp him for room. Not a bad call by any stretch of the imagination. Khawaja and Marnus still look a little unsettled and in it lies India's chance to go for the jugular.

IND vs AUS Live Score: There hasn't been a run scored in 17 balls as it's all thanks to the relentless pressure India have put on the Aussie batters, led by that man Bumrah. He is doing to them what the Aussie new-ball bowlers did to the Indians a couple of hours ago. Hitting the right lengths, getting the ball and the batters to dance around and creating chances. Labuschagne testes early. He's getting rapped on the pads and beaten outside off, but luckily for Australia, he has protected his wicket thus far.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Oh no! Virat Kohli, what have you done? Two balls after he got his DRS instincts right, Kohli drops a sitter. The ball takes Marnus Labuschagne's bat's outside edge and seemed to nestle into Kohli's hands nicely, but as the fielders went up in a bit of a premature celebration, Kohli slipped up and lost control. Immediately he says no and what a miss this is. Could have had Austrlia two down. Bumrah looks up towards the heavens.

IND vs AUS Live Score: OUT! India get one early and it's Jasprit Bumrah with the wicket of Nathan McSweeney. As the ball rapped the batter on the pads, there was some confusion with folks behind the wicket hearing two sounds. Rishabh Pant wasn't convinced, Bumrah was in two minds. But Kohli saw and sensed something no one else did. "Ley ley," he says, meaning "TAKE IT", and boy what a call it turned out to be.

Australia 14/1 in 2.3 overs.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Ah! Not ideal for India. Siraj squares up McSweeney with an outside edge but as the ball lands short of the fielders in the slips, that it was a misfield has caused Siraj some frustration. He comes back with a cracker as the ball hits Sweeney on the pads offering no shot, but hey, it's Perth. One in 10 LBWs would be given out. Huge appeal but Siraj is calmed down by his teammates.

Australia 13/0 after 2 overs vs India.

IND vs AUS Live Score: All right then, what can India get up to here. Usman Khawaja is on strike with debutant Nathan McSweeney at the other end. Captain Jasprit Bumrah has the shiny new red cherry in his hands. How India could use a few early wickets from him.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Mitchell Starc made the early inroads and Pat Cummins squeezed the life out of the Indians after coming on as first change but it is hard to think of a bowler more consistent with his line than Josh Hazlewood. He has stayed on good length mostly in that channel outside off stump, going short only to surprise Kohli today and getting a wicket off that as well. Hazlewood has finished the innings with figures of 4/29 in 13 overs.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Which may not be much of a surprise, considering we were already well past the scheduled time for the end of the second session. Well, if India are not able to make the most of the conditions the way Australia have and if they do ease off in any way, they are in for a hard, hard Test in Perth. Nitish Kumar Reddy has shown his potential though and India would be very happy with the fact that they seem to have a strong prospect to fill up that spot which Hardik Pandya would've filled had his body allowed him to do it.

IND vs AUS Live Score: Khawaja dropped a dolly two balls ago off Reddy, and now he has taken a much more difficult catch to dismiss him and end the Indian innings. Nitish Kumar Reddy is the last man to fall and he has played a very impressive knock indeed.

Reddy c Khawaja b Cummins 41 (59)

India 150 all out

IND vs AUS Live Score: India are down to their last wicket and so Tea has been pushed back by a maximum of half an hour. Reddy is on strike and Cummins is steaming in to bowl the 50th over, the all-rounder was on 35 off 55 balls. Mohammed Siraj at the other end.

India 144/9 in 49 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Bumrah managed a six off the third ball of that over. Hazlewood goes full last ball, Bumrah goes forward and pushes at it. Edged and regulation catch for Carey. India down to their last wicket now.

Bumrah c Carey b Hazlewood 8 (8)

India 144/9 in 49 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Reddy trying to farm strike now. He is forced to take a single off the fourth ball but then captain Jasprit Bumrah easily takes a single off the fifth one, bringing Reddy back on strike. Cummins bowls a short one to end that over, Reddy decides he has had enough and upper cuts it for a six over slips. As you do. Reddy has moved to 34 off 54 but now Bumrah has to face Hazlewood.

India 136/8n in 48 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: A thick edge off Harshit Rana's blade fourth ball of the 47th by Hazlewood. It went quickly towards slip and so McSweeney dives and parries at the ball at gully after it had gone behind him somewhat. The ball pops out of his hands but Labuschagne is alert right behind him and takes the rebound. Well that will probably go down as the catch of the match.

Rana c Labuschagne b Hazlewood 7 (5)

India 128/8 in 46.4 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: And that is the end of that little counter-attacking stand. Cummins goes full and Pant looks to drive it. It takes the edge and flew fast to Smith above his head. He is a very good slip fielder though and he demonstrates that by making that catch look easy. That partnership has produced 48 runs in 85 balls.

Pant c Smith b Cummins 37 (78)

India 121/7 in 46 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Pant and Reddy have now put on 48 runs off 75 balls. Pant on 37 off 73 balls at the end of the 44th over from Cummins, Reddy on 27 off 43 balls. There have been boundaries in the two overs before this but none in this one. Now Hazlewood continues for this 11th over.

India 121/6 in 44 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well, Rishabh Pant has been playing Test cricket for six years and so one would think that we would get used to something like this by now. But nope. Pat Cummins charges in last ball of he 42nd over, full delivery, Pant moves all the way across so quickly he just loses his balance completely, but who cares? He has middled that and it travels all the way over deep backward square leg for a six! That is a no-look six, simply because Pant was rolling on the ground when the ball was soaring over the boundary. He moves to 39 off 69, Reddy on 22 off 35, India finally have some kind of a partnership going.

India 114/6 in 42 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Wow, how good is this youngster looking on his first day in Test cricket! Reddy reverse sweeps Lyon for the umpteenth time second ball of the 40th, the batters run two and that brings up 100. He then defends the next ball, works the fourth ball off the pads leg side and then defends the fifth ball off the back foot. Then Reddy whips out the reverse sweep again last ball, it goes through point for a four. Reddy has moved to 21 off 31, Pant on 28 off 61 balls.

India 105/6 in 40 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well when Pant is out there, chances like these are bound to come and this time, the Australian captain cannot hold on. Fourth ball of the 39th over from Starc, Pant looks to smash the pacer down the ground. It goes high up in the air, Cummins was always trying to reach it and then can't quite judge it, makes a meal of it. Pant is on 27 off 60 at the end of that over, Reddy on 15 off 26 balls.

India 98/6 in 39 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Australia appeal for caught behind, the umpire doesn't give it and they decide against reviewing it. Had they done it, though, they would have seen the back of Reddy. Starc continues in the 37th, Pant pushes the fourth ball to cover for a single. Reddy seemed to be trying to get inside the line of the ball trying a flick but ended up sort of half leaving it. The bowler and the keeper appeal, but they don't seem to be quite sure when discussing with Cummins. Replays come immediately after the DRS countdown ends and that shows that there was glove. Reddy takes a single off the last ball and Starc tells him: "You've got a good poker face haven't ya? You must be good at poker?" Ah drama.

India 93/6 in 37 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Lyon's second ball is full and is pumped down the ground over the infield for a four by Reddy. Then he dances down the track fifth ball and smashes it inside out past mid-off for another four. Reddy on 10 off 16 at the end of that over, Pant on 25 off 52.

India 91/6 in 36 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Cummins took himself off and brought back Starc for the 35th over. Reddy took a single off the third ball of that over, his second run in 10 balls. Now Nathan Lyon replaces Mitch Marsh at the other end, just when Rishabh Pant seemed to be looking to be more proactive. It is Reddy who will face him though. Pant is on 25 off 52 balls, Reddy on two off 10.

India 83/6 in 35 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well India have stacked batters until No.8 but this latest collapse means that Nitish Kumar Reddy is their last recognised batter and we are in just the 33rd over. Sunil Gavaskar makes a point in the commentary box that the Indian batters have been punished for their lack of backfoot play, with the advent of limited overs cricket making it a habit for them to stay committed on the front foot. It meant that a player of Virat Kohli's stature had no answers when Josh Hazlewood suddenly went short. Wonder if head coach Gautam Gambhir still doesn't see any reasons to be concerned with his team's batting lineup. Reddy on nought off six balls, Pant on 18 off 44.

India 74/6 in 33 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Washington guides it to the wicketkeeper and Mitchell Marsh gets his second! He looks back in surprise and the umpire takes his time to raise the finger but he does it. Sundar looks at where the ball pitched again and then walks. He is gone fair and square though, regardless of how surprised he may be. Back of a length delivery outside off, the bounce surprises Sundar and that's that.

Sundar c Carey b Marsh 4 (15)

India 73/6 in 31.4 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Just four runs off the 31st over by Cummins, his 10th and it is quite amazing that he is yet to get a wicket today. Marsh returns for his third over in the 32nd comes charging in for the first ball but Pant's bat slips out of his hands at the non-striker's end. Washington pulls out because of that, by which point Marsh was into his delivery stride. He walks back with a smile and raises his hands in playful frustration towards his Delhi Capitals teammate Pant, who then apologises with a chuckle. Pant is on 17 off 24 at the start of that over, Sundar on four off nine.

India 71/5 in 31 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: There is the Pant we are all familiar with. He has been cautious today, having made just 10 runs in 32 balls at the start of the 29th over from Cummins. Washington Sundar gets off strike second ball and then Pant comes charging outside the crease to the third ball, absolutely slices the air around his bat in half with a big heave. It takes an edge and soars over slips, takes a few bounces before going to the boundary for a four. He gets off strike fifth ball and then a dot. Pant isn 15 off 35, Sundar on one off four. Marsh continues in the 30th over.

India 66/5 in 29 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Edged and taken at second slip! Dhruv Jurel's stay ends. That's yet another top five collapse then. That top half of the batting order has been missing for the past three Tests for India. Marsh hasn't really increased his pace in his short spell thus far but that is exactly what he does now. Jurel done for pace as he looks to defend forward and edges it to Marnus Labuschagne who takes a good low catch.

Jurel c Labuschagne b Marsh 11 (20)

India 59/5 in 27.5 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: And a big change straightaway for Australia. Mitchell Marsh has reoplaced Nathan Lyon. Pant is on strike, he has scored 10 in 24 balls, DHruv Jurel on four off 10.

India 51/4 in 25 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: While Star Sports shows footage of India's past successes against Australia at Lunch after a brief token discussion on the session, 7Cricket in Australia has aired Simon Taufel, the former umpire, explaining why the third umpire may asked Richard Kettleborough to reverse his decision.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Australia's session through and through. We can ask a thousand questions on whether Rahul was out or not but the fact remains that the Indian batters didn't have any answers to Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. Starc has figures of 2/10 in eight overs, Hazlewood has recorded 2/10 in eight overs as well. Cummins has returned figures of 0/23.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Oh KL Rahul is absolutely miffed by that. Australia celebrate more than they appeal second ball as the ball flies to the wicketkeeper off the second ball of the 23rd by Mitchell Starc. The umpire gives not out and Cummins takes the review. There is a spike when the ball is close to the edge but there is no offside angle which may have given clarity. That is because it wasn't quite clear whether the ball had really taken any of the bat when that spike came. It would've been a feather edge which should've only produced a tiny spike but then this was a big bunt. Moreover, Rahul's bat seems to hit his pads almost at the same time of all that. But with no off side angle available, the third umpire decides that there was a spike and asks a rather surprised-looking Richard Kettleborough to reverse his decision. Rahul walks off vigorously shaking his head and gesticulating to his bat and pad angrily. Penny for his thoughts, his vigil ends in this manner.

Rahul c Carey b Starc 26 (74)

India 47/4 in 23 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Here we go. Nathan Lyon to bowl his first over with about 15 minutes to go for Lunch and the man on strike will be Rishabh Pant, who played some utterly stunning shots against the Aussie spin greats in the last tour. Let's see how this goes. Pant is on six off 12, Rahul on 43/3 in 21 overs

India 43/3 in 21 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: The 19th over was Hazlewood's eighth, almost all of them on the trot with the pacer having only changed ends in between. He looked quite knackered at the end of it and so no surprises that he has been taken off after the 20th over, which was a maiden from Cummins. Mitchell Starc to bowl to Rishabh Pant, who has scored three runs in seven balls. Rahul on 26 off 71 balls.

India 40/3 in 20 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Rahul beaten off the second ball of that 18th over from Cummins. He then goes for a drive fifth ball, edges it past gully through the vacant third man area for a four. Then a jaffa from Cummins, full at off stump and then moves away late to square up Rahul, the batter walks away with a wry smile. Rahul is on 25 off 62, Pant is on none off four.

India 36/3 in 18 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Oh a snorter from Hazlewood, Kohli is on the front foot and is completely at sea. India in trouble now. Well it had just looked like they were getting a move on in the previous over, Kohli with a couple of imperious drives off back-to-back balls, gets three off each. Then Rahul sends the last ball through the off side for a four. But Kohli had set up shop on front foot and Hazlewood just tests that with a perfect short delivery, it climbs on the former India captain who fends at it and edges it to Khawaja at first slip.

Out walks Rishabh Pant.

Kohli c Khawaja b Hazlewood 5 (12)

India 32/3 in 16.2 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Big sigh of relief all over India probably as Kohli gets inside the line of the second delivery from Hazlewood 15th over and tucks it off the hip for a single. Rahul pinned to the crease after that for the rest of the over, he is on 14 off 52 (!!!), Kohli on one off eight.

India 21/2 in 15 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: That's right. India have scored just 18 runs in the first 12 overs. It has been relentless from Australia but India have also missed out on some scoring opportunities, particularly Devdutt Padikkal. Not Virat Kohli though, Hazlewood gave him absolutely nothing in that 13th over and he did well to survive an absolute corker of a last ball. He is on nought off six, Rahul on 12 off 43.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: First boundary of the match and it is as streaky as they can be. Cummins with a length ball that is dug in and Rahul begins to squat. Doesn't quite manage to get the bat out of the way completely from behind him, it flies off the edge over the wicketkeeper and runs to the boundary for four. Rahul is on 12 off 42 balls at the end of that over, Kohli to face his first ball next over in which Hazlewood continues.

India 18/2 in 12 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Not to be for Padikkal. His feet had stopped moving, he missed out on a lot of deliveries in which runs were on offer and now he falls to Hazlewood who only had a change of ends and was not taken off. Last ball of the 11th over, it seams just a bit away and that does Padikkal. Outside edge and a straigthforward catch for Alex Carey.

A murmur around the ground now as Virat Kohli walks out in what looks like just the most testing of conditions for any batter.

Padikkal c Carey b Hazlewood 0 (23)

India 14/2 in 11 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Starc is not being replaced by anyone, he is bowling his fifth over and the only run that comes in it, quite frustratingly for Padikkal, is a wide he bowled third ball. Padikkal did miss out on a couple of dead straight deliveries from Starc in that over though. Starc then bangs it in fifth ball, Padikal rides the bounce and sends it to gully one bounce. Still no runs. Then a pin-point yorker from Starc, Padikkal defends it to mid off. He is on nought off 17 balls now, Rahul on eight off 30.

India 14/1 in 9 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: And he was beaten soundly twice in that fourth over from Mitchell Starc. Padikkal defends the first ball to cover, leaves the second. Then Starc gets the third ball to hone into the middle stump at length before leaving Padikkal last ball, the batter is beaten which is probably the best possible result for him. More away swing fourth ball and Padikkal is beaten on a booming straight drive. He then lets go of the fifth ball and defends the sixth to mid on. He is on nought after 11, Rahul on six off 24.

First change for Australia and there is no respite for India. Hazlewood goes off... only to be replaced by Pat Cummins.

India 11/1 in 7 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Starc vs Rahul is turning out to be quite a contest. Starc has been enticing Rahul into playing a big offside driving, gets the third and fourth balls to move away from the batter last minute. But Rahul is not in T20 mode, doesn't even bother being too agressive, he lets the third ball go and defends the fourth. He then hits the fifth down to the ground to slip and then takes a single off the last ball. Good stuff thus far from Rahul. Just brilliant Test cricket overall with Starc and Hazlewood remaining relentless. And Pat Cummins hasn't even sent in a single delivery yet.

Rahul on four off 18, Padikkal yet to get off the mark after facing five balls.

India 9/1 in 5 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: And it comes for KL Rahul, who has been patient and watchful thus far. Hazlewood finishes the fourth over with a half-volley, Rahul pushes it out offside and runs three. This is a real baptism by fire at the moment for the Indian batters. Starc and Hazlewood forcing them to play nearly everything. Padikkal kept Starc out and that third over ended up being a wicket-maiden.

India 8/1 in 4 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Jaiswal drives on the up first ball of Starc's second over and perishes. Starc goes somewhere between full and length outside off, tempts Jaiswal into coming forward and he falls for it hook, line and stinker. Outside edge and debutant Nathan McSweeney takes the catch at gully.

Jaiswal c McSweeney b Starc 0 (8)

India 5/1 in 2.1 overs

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well Starc did bowl Rory Burns around his leg with the first ball of the last Australian summer in the Ashes at the Gabba. He went towards Jaiswal's leg this time as well but it ended up swinging that way and went well out of reach for Carey as well to the boundary. Starc makes Jaiswal play everything but the opener meets them all with nice soft hands. A no ball off the fifth ball gives another run, Jaiswal yet to get off the mark at the end of that over.

India 5/0 in 1 over

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: All right then, enough talk, we have some Test cricket to play. Yashasvi Jaiswal has taken strike and the first ball he faces in a Test match in Australia will be from Mitchell Starc. KL Rahul at the other end.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Dr Richard Walley, Aboriginal Australian musician, writer and activist for the indigenous tribes of the country, gives a rousing welcome to the two teams to Perth. This is followed by India's national anthem and then Australia's. You can feel it in the air now...

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Sunil Gavaskar, who captained India in 47 Tests, and Allan Border, Australia skipper in 93 Tests, bring out the trophy that is named after them. This will be followed by the two sets of players for the national anthem. Quite an atmosphere being built here at the gleaming Perth Stadium. They do know how to hold their sporting competitions in this country.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: KL Rahul's body hasn't been kind on him and that means that he has had to make do with playing wherever it is that he can fit, instead of making one position his own. One has to remember that Rahul was in utterly scintillating form in ODIs and Tests before his latest stint on teh sidelines which started at the end of the second Test against England at home earlier this year. He had slotted into the lower middle order at the time and played in that position again in the series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. Now, he is back at the top. Rahul has eight of Rahul's nine Test centuries have come away from home though, and one of those in Australia.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: So this is a gist of what the two skippers had to say at the toss.

Jasprit Bumrah: “We are going to bat first, looks like a good wicket. Very confident with our preparation. We played a Test match here in 2018 so we know what to expect. The wicket gets quicker. Nitish makes his debut. We have 4 quicks and Washi is the lone spinner.”

Pat Cummins: “We were 50-50, either way we are pretty happy. Feel well placed, pretty fresh. Any format we (India-Australia) play seems fiercely fought. Nathan McSweeney makes our debut at the top of the order.”

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: As stated earlier, McSweeney is making his debut and will open the batting with Usman Khawaja.

Australia XI: Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well how about this, India have left out both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and gone with Washington Sundar as their lone spinner. That, along with the inclusion of Reddy gives them a long batting lineup. But one just wonders how much they will regret leaving both their premier, experienced spinners out. Devdutt Padikkal filling in for Shubman Gill at No.3 and Dhruv Jurel playing as a specialist batter at No.6. No place for Sarfaraz Khan.

India XI: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Nitish KumarReddy, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah (C), Mohammed Siraj

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah has won the toss and he says that India are batting first.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: All right Ravi Shastri is making the Perth Stadium shake with his voice. Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumrah are out there in their Test blazers, as are Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar and the match referee of course. Here we go!

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: All right it's confirmed now! Virat Kohli has handed Nitish Kumar Reddy his debut cap while Ravichandran Ashwin has done the same for Harshit Rana. Surely SIraj is playing as well and so that is effective a five-man pace attack for India.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: This isn't how it was expected to go. India played 10 Tests in this ongoing season, five at home and five here in Australia. They needed to win five and draw one to cement a spot in the WTC Final and the first part of that criteria was assumed to be a done deal considering their invincibility at home. That was reiterated in the utterly ridiculous measures they took to force a win out of the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh. And then, that air of invincibility combusted spectacularly as they ticked off a number of unwanted firsts in a 3-0 defeat at home to New Zealand. That now means that India need to win four of the upcoming matches in Australia to qualify for the WTC Final. Easier said than done, to put it mildly.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: All right Cheteshwar Pujara has made his presence felt in the series already, albeit from the commentary box. Pujara will be in the comms box for this series, having pretty much lost his place in the Indian Test side. Pujara tiring the Australian fast bowlers and sucking their souls played a huge role in India winning the last two tours. In fact, this is the first time in this century that India are travelling to Australia without a player in that mould at No.3, having played with either Rahul Dravid or Pujara in that position.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Travis Head has hit a purple patch in all formats in the last few years and few teams have felt the heat of that more than India. He was the heartbeat of Australia's victory in the 2023 World Cup final against India, scoring 137 runs in 120 balls as Pat Cummins' men silenced the home favourites. Before that, he smashed 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47.00 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. If Australia are to gain an early advantage in this series, surely a big score from the lower middle order by Head will go a long way

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: ... in the Australian camp and it is one that is not at all surprising. Darren Lehmann has presented Nathan McSweeney with his first Baggy Green.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Well, the numbers reflect the memories in the case of Rishabh Pant in Australia. He has scored a whopping 624 runs at an average of 62.40 in 12 innings at a healthy strike rate of 72.13 with one century and two quite legendary half-centuries.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: It has been topsy turvy for Indian batters off late but the one steady port in the storm has been Rishabh Pant. Pant may be better known for being the life and blood of India's utterly unbelievable 2020/21 series win in Australia but he also made the most of a tired Australian bowling lineup in 2018/19 as well. Pant scored a majestic 159 not out in the final Test of that series at the SCG while Cheteshwar Pujara made a towering 193 off 373 balls at the other end. He first shared an 89-run stand with Pujara and then an unbeaten 204-run stand off just 224 balls which broke the backs of the already deflated Australians.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Both of India's series wins in Australia on their last two tours came under Ravi Shastri. Since then, Rahul Dravid came and went in the role and now, India have Gautam Gambhir at the helm. The ODI series loss to Sri Lanka last month and the 3-0 thrashing at the hands of New Zealand has meant that Gambhir's tenure hasn't exactly gotten off to a good start. But this is what Shastri had to say to Gambhir ahead of the Australia series: "My first message to him would be to keep calm. Don't let outside elements influence you in any way. Because of that, don't get into a position where knee-jerk reactions happen. Be calm and understand your players; you will see them in match situations. You will see them in India, and you will see them overseas. You will notice what it takes for a player to tick. You will understand team situations where one player might be better than the other just because of your understanding of his temperament. These are things that don't come overnight. It took me some time to understand."

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: It has been wet in Perth leading up to the Test and the head curator here seemed to have rather given up on the sun making an appearance in the hours before the start of play. However, that is exactly what can be seen today in Perth. Clear, blue skies and a lovely day for some Test cricket.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: That is what the Indian Express is reporting at least. Ashwin could be seen taking a close look at the pitch yesterday. India have often gone for all-pace attacks in their last two tours of Australia and so it won't be anything new if they leave out both their premier spin-bowling all-rounders.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: 1407 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 56.28 with three centuries and eight half-centuries. Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a good start to his Test career, to put it extremely mildly. Much of that success has come in India and two Tests he played in the West Indies though. He didn't have a great time of it in South Africa, scoring just 50 runs in four innings. But then Jaiswal's purple patch really started only after that series in South Africa and so this particular tour would certainly be seen as one of the big moments of his career in the years to come, regardles of how it goes.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: The only unknown quantity in this Australian lineup for India would be their opener Nathan McSweeney. Few challenges are more difficult in Test cricket nowadays than facing a fresh Jasprit Bumrah with the new ball but that is exactly how McSweeney will be introduced to Test cricket. However, The 25-year-old is known to possess a calm head on his shoulder right since his underage days, to the point that his school PE teacher nicknamed him ‘Buddha’.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: India's last Test match at Perth was also the only one they lost in that historic 2018/19 series. Strangely enough, that was also the only Test in the series in which their captain Virat Kohli scored a century. Considering his lofty standards at the time, it was quite rare for Kohli not to score more than one century in a series. Kohli scored 123 in 257 balls, putting up partnerships of 74 with Cheteshwar Pujara, 91 with Ajinkya Rahane and 50 with Hanuma Vihari. Kohli has been pretty much a shadow of the century machine that he was in Test cricket between 2016 and 2019 but it is widely expected that he could come good in this series. A good way to start that might be to do a repeat of what he did the last time he played in Perth.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: The set of players that could be called Australia's core, loosely defined as Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Travis Head, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc, are all above 30 in this series.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: A look at Australia's very recent record would tell you that they have suffered rather topsy-turvy fortunes in Test cricket. However, the fact remains that very few sides have been able to actually beat them in a Test series for a while now. In fact, Australia have played 16 Test series since they lost to Pakistan in the UAE in October 2018. They have lost just three of those. The problem for them though, is that all three of those losses have been against India!

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Too early for a pitch report maybe but we can remember what the curator here had to say a couple of days before Day 1. The first look of the Perth pitch showed a lot of grass on the surface. Curator Isaac McDonald said that the initial plan was to depend on the sun to bake the pitch in the days leading up to the Test. But with the overcast conditions, the ground staff may have to "manufacture" the baking process.

“I mean everyone talks about the traditional baking of the top. We can kind of manufacture that with more rolling and less water on top if we have to. We’re testing the wicket hour by hour, so it’s quite conditions-based at the moment. So at the moment we’re leaning towards rolling it a bit more on top to get that firmness and that happy medium between bat and ball. But yeah, fingers crossed the sun pops out," he said. However, McDonald also said that the ground staff were well on course to ensuring that the pitch is “rock hard” come Friday.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: The absence of Rohit Sharma is not the only hole India have to fill in their lineup. There is no Mohammad Shami either and that means that Harshit Rana could make his international debut today if India decide against using Akash Deep as their third seamer. Another newbie could be pace-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has already made heads turn in international cricket with his performances in the series against Bangladesh. An injury to Shubman Gill has opened up a place in the batting order as well which could be filled up by either Dhruv Jurel or Devdutt Padikkal, both of whom impressed in the home series against England earlier this year.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: The first Test to be hosted in Perth was between Australia and (no prizes for guessing) England from December 11 to 16, 1970. Australia didn't really gain a foothold at the WACA in the initial years of Test cricket there - they won just two of the first five Test matches at the ground, with the first Test being drawn, the West Indies subjecting them to an innings defeat in 1975 and England beating them in 1978. In this century, though, only South Africa and India have been able to beat them here. India did it once in January 2008 while South Africa did it thrice in December 2008, December 2012 and November 2016.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: For the uninitiated, this match is not happening at the WACA. That old stadium stopped being a Test venue back in 2018. India were the visiting team in the first Test that the Perth Stadium, or Optus Stadium, hosted and that was in December 2018. Today, India will be the first visiting team to return to the stadium for a second Test. Australia had won that first Test by 146 runs. They have since faced New Zealand, West Indies and Pakistan here and won those Tests by 296 runs, 164 runs and 360 runs respectively.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: That is what you feel like saying whenever a Test series happens in Australia but what is unique about this one is that both captains for the first match of this five-game series at least are designated pace bowlers. This will be Pat Cummins' 28th Test as Australia captain while Jasprit Bumrah is leading India for just the second time.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: In case you haven't noticed, that is Jasprit Bumrah holding one ear of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the pre-series pic, not Rohit Sharma. That is because Rohit is in India for the birth of his second child and will arrive in Perth only on November 24. Many people have had a lot to say about Rohit's call, but it is quite difficult to come up with a convincing argument for someone to miss the birth of their child for work, regardless of what that work is. The decent thing to do is congratulate Rohit and his newly expanded family and move on.

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Alex Carey(w), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins(c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Scott Boland

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Reddy, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah(c), Mohammed Siraj, Sarfaraz Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, Abhimanyu Easwaran

India vs Australia LIVE Score 1st Test: Dust off those didgeroos because the Australian summer is here and so is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Travel back to the early 2000s and tell an Indian fan that their side would go into a Test rubber in Australia with a chance of completing a hat-trick of series wins in that nation and they would've thought they are hearing the contents of a fever dream. But that is exactly what India have a chance at doing. However, chinks have fallen off their armour in ways they almost never have before. All sets us up for a fascinating first Test at the very least. Stay tuned for more updates.
