Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has lauded Tilak Varma, identifying him as a promising all-format player for Team India following his match-winning display in the second T20I against England in Chennai. Tilak's unbeaten score of 72 runs off 55 balls was instrumental in securing India's narrow two-wicket victory as they successfully chased down a target of 166, thereby taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
At just 22 years of age, Tilak made a dynamic entrance, applying early pressure on the English bowlers. However, as wickets fell at regular intervals, he adeptly adjusted his approach to stabilize the innings, demonstrating exceptional game awareness in the closing overs by collaborating with the lower-order batsmen to guide India to victory.
By forming vital partnerships with Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi, Tilak ensured his presence at the crease until the end, ultimately hitting the winning runs with four balls remaining. His innings, which included four boundaries and five sixes, earned him the Player of the Match accolade.
Rayudu, in his comments on Star Sports, conveyed his admiration for Tilak's composure and potential, asserting, “I believe India has discovered a significant talent, and he has the capability to excel in all formats. He is not merely a T20 player. Given the maturity he exhibited today (during the India vs England 2nd T20I), he possesses the qualities to be a match-winner for India for many years to come. Therefore, I believe he should receive support across all formats.”
Tilak’s impressive consistency in T20Is is highlighted by his remarkable streak of 318 runs without being dismissed, which includes two centuries. Rayudu emphasized the crucial influence of captain Suryakumar Yadav in enhancing Tilak’s confidence.
“He is an exceptional cricketer, and I have witnessed his development in Hyderabad. He has delivered four outstanding performances. Since Suryakumar Yadav took over as captain, the confidence and trust placed in him have been reciprocated fully,” remarked Rayudu.
With his capacity to adapt to various match scenarios, Tilak has demonstrated his preparedness for greater challenges. He will now aim to maintain his excellent form in the upcoming third T20I against England.
