Former champion PV Sindhu showcased glimpses of her former aggressive style, while young Kiran George maintained his composure under pressure to secure straight-game victories, advancing to the quarter-finals of the India Open 2025. In the men’s doubles category, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty rallied from a game down to reach the final eight.
Sindhu, participating in her second tournament since the Paris Olympics, decisively defeated Japan’s Manami Suizu with scores of 21-15, 21-13. Kiran triumphed over French player Alex Lanier with a scoreline of 22-20, 21-13 in the second round of men’s singles.
Later in the day, the 2022 champions Satwik and Chirag had to regroup after losing the first game, ultimately overcoming Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi and Hiroki Okamura with scores of 20-22, 21-14, 21-16.
Among other notable competitors, last year's runners-up Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong saved a match point in a tense decider against Toma Junior Popov, eventually winning the match after one hour and 16 minutes with scores of 14-21, 21-18, 22-20 to progress to the quarter-finals.
Having been sidelined for over six months, Sindhu initially appeared out of sorts in her opening match against Shuo Yun Sung of Chinese Taipei. However, she regained her form against Suizu, aggressively targeting winners from both sides of the court.
After a competitive start, Sindhu surged to a 13-6 lead in the first game. Although Suizu managed to close the gap to 14-13, the Indian star maintained control and extended her lead. The second game was marked by Sindhu's dominance, as she consistently executed cross-court winners.
“After a break, I was pleased with my movement and the effectiveness of my attacks today. Looking ahead, I must be prepared for tougher matches,” remarked Sindhu, who is set to face Indonesian fourth seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who defeated another Japanese player, Natsuki Nadaira, with scores of 21-12, 24-22 in a separate second-round match.
Earlier, Kiran demonstrated resilience by saving six-game points against Lanier in the first game. The 24-year-old, who entered the competition at the last minute from the reserves list, displayed remarkable skill.
