Sunil Chhetri is set to make his return to the Indian national football team during the upcoming FIFA window in March. The forward had previously announced his retirement from international football in June of last year; however, he reversed this decision after being called back to the squad by head coach Manolo Marquez.

In March, India will compete against the Maldives in a friendly match, followed by a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh, which they must win.

In a post-match press conference following an ISL game, Marquez elaborated on his decision to reinstate Chhetri, stating, “We are in a competition that we need to win, and scoring goals is essential, whether through open play or set-pieces. In the four matches I have overseen, we have only managed to score two goals, and we need to improve on that.”

He further noted, “If we consider the ISL, Sunil Chhetri stands as the top Indian goalscorer, followed by Brison Fernandes and Subhasish Bose. This is the national team, and we require players who can perform effectively right away.”

Marquez emphasized the importance of developing young talent but acknowledged that achieving results is the primary concern. “I have consistently asserted that the players who will represent the national team in the future are crucial, but the national team must secure results. At this juncture, Chhetri is the finest Indian striker, and there is no doubt about that,” he remarked.

Additionally, Marquez expressed high regard for Ashique Kuruniyan, who has also been included in the squad. “I recognize that Ashique Kuruniyan may not be able to play a full 90 minutes. However, during the time he is on the field, he possesses the ability to alter the course of the game with his strength and technical skills,” he stated.

“He is versatile, capable of playing as a left-back or a winger. In the national team, he has also taken on roles as an attacking midfielder and even a striker. In my view, he is among the best players in India. Although he has not had extensive playing time if he can contribute for a few minutes, he will be invaluable to our efforts,” he concluded.

The decision to recall Chhetri was slammed by Indian legend Bhaichung Bhutia, who felt that it would hamper the development and progress of Indian football.
