New Delhi: The famous Delhi Golf Club (DGC) is set to host the latest event from the DP World Tour later this year, featuring a record prize purse of $4 million, which makes the DP World India Championship the most costly golf tournament ever held in India. HT reported this news in January, highlighting the possibility that five-time Major winner Rory McIlroy may make his debut in India during this competition. That option is still on the table.

"DP World Tour is in contact with several leading players, including Rory, and we are optimistic that he will participate," a senior member of DGC informed HT.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from October 16-19 on the Gary Player-designed course, and it is co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). This event will be the eighth of nine in the Back 9 segment of the 2025 Race to Dubai, as it progresses towards the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs, culminating in the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

Additionally, this tournament signifies the Tour’s return to DGC for the first time since 2016, ending a two-year wait for the club to host an international event. After its renovation by Gary Player in 2019, the club organized the initial two editions of the DGC Open (2022 and 2023), but the tournament, co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, has not returned since.

DP World Tour Returns to Delhi Golf ...

The club entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the DP World Tour in January when Ben Cowen, the Chief Tournament Business Officer of DP World Tour, visited Delhi. Alongside McIlroy, who clinched the 2025 Masters in a playoff against Justin Rose, Hero Indian Open champions Eugenio Chacarra (2025) and Keita Nakajima (2024) are anticipated to participate in the European Tour event.

The DP World India Championship will represent the third prominent men's golf tournament in India this year, succeeding the inaugural Asian Tour and LIV Golf-funded $2 million International Series and the DP World Tour’s Hero Indian Open last month, which featured a purse of $2. 25 million.

“We are thrilled to reaffirm our dedication to golf in India by launching the new DP World India Championship, and we look forward to advancing our shared vision to promote the sport in the country. Our gratitude also extends to Delhi Golf Club for allowing us to return to such an iconic venue this October,” Cowen stated.
