"I'm Stubborn": Rishabh Pant Reflects on Controversial Post-Match Scene with KL Rahul and Goenka

2 months ago | 5 Views

India's wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant expressed his views regarding the contentious incident involving KL Rahul and owner Sanjiv Goenka, which unfolded following the Lucknow Super Giants' significant defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024. After SRH triumphed over LSG by 10 wickets, a post-match confrontation was captured on camera, showcasing a heated dialogue and gestures between the captain and the owner, which sparked considerable speculation and discussion. Goenka appeared visibly distressed as he confronted Rahul, who bore a look of disappointment.

Those involved have attempted to downplay the situation. LSG coach Justin Langer emphasized that Goenka is among the most composed individuals he has encountered and characterized the exchange as merely animated, a common occurrence following matches. Weighing in on the matter, Pant remarked that such interactions are typical after a team suffers a loss, although he was uncertain about the specifics of the incident. He acknowledged that he often faces criticism but manages it in his own manner.

"I honestly did not grasp what transpired in that moment. It appeared significant from an external perspective, and while I cannot ascertain the details, there was clearly something occurring. Following a defeat, numerous discussions inevitably arise. However, regarding the portrayal of the incident, I remain uncertain. I did not view the video in real-time; had I done so, I could have provided a clearer response. I receive reprimands daily, yet I tend to be quite headstrong," the dynamic Indian batter stated during an episode of 'Aap ki Adalat' on India TV.

Recapping the reactions of the Goenka-Rahul episode

The incident involving Rahul and Goenka is now behind them. LSG assistant coach Lance Klusener has downplayed any suggestions of discord between the two. There were speculations that Rahul might be released prior to the upcoming mega-auction in December, following LSG's failure to qualify for the IPL Playoffs; however, these rumors were later dismissed. Regardless of any underlying issues, the two reconciled when Goenka hosted a private dinner for Rahul, during which they shared a warm embrace.

Nonetheless, the public nature of their reconciliation did not sit well with several observers. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, along with other players, expressed that such discussions should have remained private. Having served as a mentor for Punjab Kings from 2016 to 2018, Sehwag noted that, regardless of the circumstances, Goenka would ultimately benefit financially.

Goenka's frustration may also be attributed to LSG's disappointing performance this season. Under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir, the Lucknow Super Giants had successfully reached the IPL Playoffs in both 2022 and 2023. However, following Gambhir's transition to Kolkata Knight Riders, the franchise struggled, finishing seventh in the standings with 14 points. This occurred despite Rahul's commendable individual performance, as he amassed 520 runs at an average of 37.14, including four half-centuries.
